Ok, thanks. I'm just worried that some recordings will fail; how long should I give it to pick up all the imminent planned recordings again

Nope, though this includes SL's that aren't currently active.
Is this an unusually high amount? If so, perhaps this is the cause of some of the problems and I should delete some??
I think that the not recording in standby bug has started to affect some (not all) of my recordings, so I now leave it on all the time.
Some programmes only partially record and others fail completely, marked "Not available".
Could this and the recent very warm weather be causing the TiVo to malfunction (as it doesn't have a fan)?

Re: Major TiVo Update
Having 400 Series Link+s would certainly give TiVo a lot of work to do each time the EPG gets updated or you add a new Series Link+.

It's certainly more than average. I'd suggest you delete ones that are no longer required.

Yes, that's the bug. If things go to plan, it'll be fixed next week.

The TiVo will shut itself down with a message on the screen if it overheats.

It's what people have been advised to do as a workaround until the bug is fixed.
It may be being released right now.
Don't know if it was a coincidence or not, but as I my TiVo was running slow, I set it to reboot at 2:59. Perhaps this coincided with a planned update programmed to start at 3am??
Instead of the normal routine, I currently have a screen telling me that it is downloading three updates and then it will restart.
In case this isn't for the standby bug, i'm going to leave it on all night again
After all, SP did say that it would be done next week if possible.
...now rebooting again.
... It's now installing the software.
And back on! Can't see anything different as yet, will repost if anything shows up.

Re: Major TiVo Update
I just rebooted and went from 20.5.7.rc20 to 20.5.7.rc23. So are updates not automatic anymore and why have Virgin not announced this important change? It's very inconvenient having to wait 20 minutes for an update when you are expected a 10 minute reboot. So is the standby fault fixed or are we expected to test it for them again??
There are now strange symbols instead of text in My Shows, which weren't there yesterday. What is that all about???
Performance is back to what it was before the previous version that made it practically unusable. Fortunately I didn't listen to the advise of deleting thumbs and all of that but no doubt it will be slow again after a day or two as usually happens with updates.

Only if you have software version 20.5.7.RC20 which contains a bug where recordings can fail when the box is in standby

You triggered the update by rebooting the box, otherwise you would have got it later in the week. Teesside and parts of Manchester and Wolverhampton were the targeted regions this morning, but Cisco boxes in the other pilot regions will also update if rebooted.

Likewise for you. You must have a Cisco box in one of the other pilot regions.

It is reported to be fixed, but feel free to test it.

Re: Major TiVo Update
My Tivo is being updated this moment, hopefully this will be a fix to the recording in standby fault. How long does the update usually take? Mine has been in the "installing software" screen for the past hour and I dare not touch it.

The update that I received at 3am this morning took about ten minutes as opposed to the normal reboot time of five minutes.
However, i've just set my box to clear 'Programme information & Planned Recordings'. It said that this could take up to an hour.
What's actually happened is that it rebooted and i've now got another screen that says:
"Installing software. Do not turn off the power".
Is this what your screen says?
I wonder if another update has been sent that only becomes available when the box is rebooted?
Edit: It took about 12 minutes and the screen now says:
"Clearing your data...
The guide and Planned Recordings are now being reset.
Sit tight, this might take a few minutes".
Is this the software intended to speed up the existing boxes prior to the introduction of the new box?
Edit 2: It took about eight minutes and is now rebooting, so I think your box might have become stuck Ultimate.

Re: Major TiVo Update
I phoned up VM just now and she says a lot of peoples' update was stuck on the "installing software" screen, she asked me to turn off the Tivo with the on/off button at the back, wait for one minute and restart, the Tivo booted up normally and has the new software. Just tested the scheduled recording on standby and it is looking good.

Glad that was sorted out.
So it seems that, despite all the warnings about not turning off the box during an update, doing so just delays whatever update it is carrying out and it picks it up as soon as it's switched back on!

I bet it started the update this morning at 3am, but I was busy all day until I sat down at 5pm and noticed the updating status, so when I turn the set off it must have already done its updating but was stuck on rebooting. So when it is updating, it is still risky to turn the power off unless you wait more than 1 hour.

Good point.
After the reboot, I can watch live TV & recordings, but well after the maximum of one hour quoted, I still have a blank EPG and no Planned Recordings!
My evening recordings are now starting, so i'll just keep making manual recordings until everything is back to normal.
Curiously, it has made a Suggestion. This Suggestion is showing in My Shows as available to watch because i've already recorded it??
I don't know what it's basing this on, as it currently has no EPG!!!
It obviously receives information from Thumbs up and programmes that have been recorded. I wonder if it looks at Series Links that have not yet recorded anything and/or live TV (as in effect live TV on TiVo is simply a recording that you are watching in real time).
Edit: Over two hours later and it's still not populated the EPG or Planned Recordings AND it's cleared Recording Hiccups- so I can't check if anything failed yesterday (I normally check the previous days recordings every day, so that alternative arrangements can be made if neccessary).
I know it hasn't got stuck though as it has partially populated Planned Recordings with some daily & weekly manual recordings that I have set. I guess it's now waiting for information from the EPG.

In most cases it will recover from a reboot during a software update, but there are some critical times where a reboot could leave the box in an unrecoverable state. So we wouldn't recommend it unless the box is clearly stuck.

The quoted hour is just to do the clear (actually it's a lot quicker than that in my experience). It then needs to download the full guide data again, which will take a couple of hours, then a bit longer to re-process your series links.
To quote myself from post #240: "It'll take a couple of hours so don't do it when you've got recordings scheduled in the near future. "
