Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

At the moment Scotland get cash from the UK Government. And l agree with Stephen.

But, Sturgeon was relying on Oil, to bring in the cash. Well if they want to remain part of EU. Most of that cash they earn from Oil, will be swallowed up by the EU.

And if l am not wrong, the Scots, get a load of stuff FREE, compared to the UK. This will all go out the window.

Apart from Oil, where else do they get money from ?

And everyone thinks that trade will stop with other countries - l think they are wrong. We are one of the richest countries going.

When the result came out, the markets fell. But Boris said that the markets haad now steadied. And everything was now fine

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

Spain has torpedoed any chance of Scotland negotiating a place in the EU while the UK negotiates to leave.

If Sturgeon wants Scotland in the EU, she will have to win a referendum, wait for the UK to complete Brexit, then start negotiations to join. Which will take quite a long time.

Not to mention the fact that she'll not inherit the UK's optouts and will have to have all the EU baggage of a new country joining including the Euro.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

The Spanish were never going to just let Scotland slide in and if sturgeon didn't realise that then the people of Scotland need to think about her competence. What's clear is the SNP is not going to stop until they get what they want and will exploit any situation to get it no matter the consequences for Scotland. I have a feeling that in any future independence referendum Scots will look back on the EU referendum as a bastion of truth compared to what they will have to endure.

I wouldn't be too surprised if she had an EEA+ relationship in mind initially. Something closer than the UK would contemplate now but not full membership.

Scotland opting out of Schengen would be an easy concession from the EU. The system makes more sense for land borders where people might want to cross easily and frequently but being on an island means people will face friction and will have to provide some sort of identification (for a plane at least) anyway.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

To me personally. Scotland couldn't afford to go into the EU. Most f there finance comes from the London Parliament - doesn't it ?

They cant rely on North Sea Oil, as this will run out soon, from what l hear.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

OK, I give up. I have asked this before but surely Nicola can huff & puff as much as she likes but unless Westminster votes in new legislation for a new Scottish referendum, nothing can happen, right?

Isn't this Much Ado About Nothing?

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

It's unlikely she could even introduce legislation for a referendum without legislation first being passed at Westminster. The presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament is legally obliged to reject a bill that is outside the competence of the parliament.

The real question is, the circumstances under which a Tory government would consider it less damaging to refuse to agree to a referendum than to allow it and risk losing.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

Nothing can be done until after we leave the EU.

The government will not grant another referendum before as it would hinder our exit negotiations.

Scotland cannot apply for any kind of membership as they are not a sovereign nation, and it would be blocked by Spain and Belgium at a minimum.

Post EU exit a referendum could be granted but that would leave Scotland outside the UK and the EU. They could apply for membership of the EU but they would have to accept everything that consists of.

She ain't going to be happy, it's a good reminder that no one gets everything they want - even if they think they can, even if they stamp their feet, even if they say it very LOUDLY.

Guess they'll be forever unhappy, as even if they get shot of us, and if they get in the EU, it wouldn't be the EU version they want.

Ho hum.

Please feel free to substitute 'some Leave campaigners' for 'they' in your first paragraph...
