LAN ports suddenly stopped connecting

weird problem, all working fine, left the desktop connected via LAN in modem mode for a couple of hours, came back and no connection. windows suggested no cable connected.

hard reset back to router mode and I could connect by wireless on the laptop but neither it nor the desktop could connect via LAN.

strange behaviour on the hub LAN ports, they are all 4 lit up solid green constantly even when no cables in and even when in modem mode. no data flicker and there is no data flicker at all on the computer end when you plug the cables in.

cable and laptop was tested by plugging it into friends superhub 1 and instantly connected to the internet. Incidentally his superhub LAN lights only come on when a cable is plugged into the port

I suspect the LAN ports of the hub have packed in. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

cheers
Steve

Re: LAN ports suddenly stopped connecting

Yes, exactly this last week. Was online on the desktop, I went to make a coffee and when I came back I was offline. Wireless was still ok on my phone and tablet.
After messing about shutting down and rebooting superhub, still no joy, so I unplugged the modem cable and plugged back in and was working again.

numerous reboots havent helped me sadly.

also see "system over temperature" errors in router log (in router mode) is this common for hub 1's?

Re: LAN ports suddenly stopped connecting

ok the fact the LAN ports are all permanently lit up like an Xmas tree has prompted them to send me a replacement.

another SH1 (how many of these damned things have they still got?????)

anyway I have to activate it so i am asking:

what can i expect when I phone up? whats the procedure and what do i need to have to hand? previous contact with VM has always left me steaming because you get half way thru the call and it asks for something like a password you cant remember and didnt realise you needed. Will the activation be via a person or just pressing buttons on the phone. I have never had to activate personally before.

cheers

I would just complain and say you want a newer hub and not accept anything less.

There will be a sticker on the box asking you to ring an automated phone number. I think it aaks you what your phone number is, house number and account number and then it says "we are aware you are expecting a new hub, it will be activated shortly and we will automatically reboot it" (or something to that effect). It is a very straight forward process and mine was up and running within 2 hours.

Re: LAN ports suddenly stopped connecting

ok another question...

currently i can get internet via wifi on the old hub, being a cynical old bugger, if after I have activated this new hub, it fails to work for whatever reason, can I get the old SH1 reinstated on the account?

I ask because i saw it suggested they you cant for SH1 but could for SH2, anyone got any info on reinstating old kit if new stuff fails?

nope, the old shub is still working because it is the one registered on your account and when the new one gets activated the old one will cease to work. When old cpe gets removed/replaced it is added to a defunct list which basically says it is broken etc so VM know not to add it back onto the system. It isn't a case of we'll replace one mac address on the account with a different one, they track all the equipment so you can't re-add old stuff. You might have heard of it happening in the past but it has got to be an extreme circumstance. I have only ever heard of it happening once. Years ago I put in a complaint to the CEOs office regarding the shub1 and wanted my vmng300 reactivating which I still had and was as good as new. They told me they couldn't add it back onto my account and they sent me a new one instead and this will be the case for you. If you ever need to replace your new shub in the future with either the current model or perhaps a newer one when we mov to docsis3.1, they'll send you another new shub which they know/believe to be in perfect working order.

Re: LAN ports suddenly stopped connecting

I suspected as much. I am just aware that i could go from a usable (if slightly hamstrung) connection on wifi to nothing at all in seconds and it take 4 days to get yet another modem out. Not great when i'm trying to use it for work

It would actually help if this dying one would just kick the bucket and force the issue mind you the fact that the logo button now seems to randomly swap between blue and purple even tho it is in router mode with wifi on, does not bode well for its life expectancy.
