Even if the exclusivity period lasted a whole year, it would be a lot better than now.

maybe sales of DVD and boxsets through amazon/apple for non sky subscribers (through Sky or NowTv) are generating enough for them not to bother. I don't know the margins but maybe better than streaming perhaps?

From what l hear they make a fair sum from sales of DVD's and boxsets.

When they finally materialise. I don't understand why HBO series take almost twelve months to turn up on disc but are available as HD digital downloads (iTunes, Amazon and Google) as soon as a show finishes a season on Sky Atlantic.

They probably turn a better profit from downloads than discs

Well that's a question they need to answer as sell through movies are released much quicker onto the sell through market and quite a few series from ITV and the BBC are generally released pretty much after they have finished.

Surprising as downloads are pretty expensive in my book.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2
What I don't like about digital downloads of box sets is that they don't seem to drop in price. The DVD box set price drops as they get older. And of course, for valid reasons, you can't buy a second hand copy of a digital download. Often, second hand DVD box sets are an absolute bargain.
When DVDs eventually disappear, building a video library will become very expensive.

Not sure about that. On Amazon, GoT season 5 is today £22.99 as an HD download, but £33 on Blu-Ray and £30 on DVD. Older seasons are cheaper as downloads too (season 1 is £14.99 in HD now).
But I agree about secondhand box sets being the best value.

I picked up the second season of Nikita (2011 -2014 series) for £2.69 with free postage.
I rip my DVDs so not fussed at the box condition provided the discs play.
I've been buying CDs and DVDs for many, many years with just one or two bad discs turning up, which are returnable. I tend to use Zoverstocks via Amazon Market place, who are the same company as Music Magpie online and estocks on Ebay. Even though they are the same company, prices can differ between them.

Yep, prices do vary and bargains come along. I've got into the habit of checking the prices of all format options. The first 22 episode season of Nikita (a month or so ago) was £4.99 in HD digital download from Amazon, so grabbed that, but the second season in HD is £19.99; way too much IMHO.

I think it would be hard to have a stand-alone HBO streaming service selling year-old content that has already been on pay TV. This type of service could work as a bundled channel like Fox but would not support a stand-alone service.

More people are now streaming as opposed to buying DVD's.
In the short term you might be able to get a bargain, but as you say it will take things more difficult in the long term.

Due to circumstances beyond our control the next thread will launch in late December and will be called "Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)".
