Re: Virgin Media Business 300Mb announced

I wonder when the 300mb will be coming to use residential customers.

When it becomes cheap enough to provide or competition demands it.

Last quarter of this year or of 2017 most likely, depending.

I can't say I'm sure of the value of 300Mb over 200Mb unless it comes with a substantial uplift to upstream speed though. It's gone way beyond utility and is pure marketing now.

Re: Virgin Media Business 300Mb announced

What I do find strange, but not surprising, is that VMB have chosen a new hub - the Hitron for their new services. Yet the firmware is not ready for their full range of business services, just as the 2AC was also not ready. Given that device was in use for about a year for their 152 Mb/s business services, I do wonder why it took that long to select a new device that had a similar shortcoming.

Is their way of offering multiple fixed IP so very strange that no hardware vendor has firmware support for it? If there is support out there on Cable CPE for their method why not select a device capable of that from day one?

They now have no new services in their line up until May/June where the publicly routable IP address can be assigned to the device sitting behind the VMB supplied device - a challenge if you want to form LAN to LAN VPN tunnels etc.

The old Cable modem fixed IP service had that as did the 50 Mb/s based business SH1, but nothing since.

I have just asked about disabling SIP ALG apparently the new device can't do that either at the moment.

Hhm so yes it's a newer breed of device, supports 24x8 channels etc and handles the higher speeds, but it seems half finished - did VMB not learn their lesson with the SH1?!

I am surprised that they didn't select a device that could at least offer all the features of the one it is supposed to be replacing from launch.

In effect now the business cable broadband services are worse off feature wise than they were 2 weeks ago.

While I am pleased to finally see some higher speed business services, I do wonder at the way they have been launched.

Re: Virgin Media Business 300Mb announced

I'd prefer an increase on the upstream before another downstream increase. Can't think of what a residential customer would need 300meg for, unless potentially a 7 bedroom student house or something similar.

Re: Virgin Media Business 300Mb announced

I got a callback from the VMB office after I did a speedtest and so I took the opportunity of asking them when the residential product would start rolling out the new tier and she said "end of the year" .. for what this is worth ..

They are testing and and will be launching services as and when its ready, this device will provide alot more than previous, trying to test on a large scale and not releasing because they are testing will also generate complaints as people would also not be happy that it is available but the testing part is taking to long ect

Understood - but what I struggle with is the fact that right now the new device does a fair bit less then the existing business SH1. So am wondering why they selected a device that does less now than the Netgear based business SH1 did 3 years ago!

Good to hear it will improve and offer more though for sure.

I have tested for VMB in the past, have been keen to do more but they don't ever respond to emails on that subject now.
