Sky take on a VM Unique Selling Point.

Looks like Sky are to start to erode one of the Unique Selling Points that VM use to try to gain customers- that they will repair the box free of charge.
The new Sky Q box will offered for £99 and will be rented; in the same way that VM do business.
I've never seen the advantage of owning a Sky box, it's value plummets once it's been bought and the customer is liable for any repairs after one year.
Edit: Oh and they've set up a UK call centre for Sky Q customers.

One suspects to start off with there won't be that many takers though until they cut the prices.

For £99 I bet it wont be long before the initial fees gets dropped to upsell customers to the Q Package.

The pay tv companies have lost the plot , only the other day I was looking at VM's prices specifically the big Kahuna bundle and the ongoing costs were in excess of £70. My main interest in the bundle was the XL TV however it appears the top tier BB is forced on you something I don't want and will never need 50mb would do us fine.
Its the exact same with Sky bundles which include the expensive products basically overkill to push up ARPU.
Pay TV has now become overly expensive thanks to bundling with top tier products many of us just don't need.

As separate pricing TV XL is £32 a month and 50Mbit broadband is £19 a month on top of a phone line
So that's £51 a month, and the Big Kahuna is £55 a month.
I do appreciate it's still a difference, but it's not a big a difference as you might expect.

The website says TVXL on its own is £39.50? An would the big Kahuna be £73 a month? As you cannot have it without taking the £17.99 phone line?

I was on the road to doing this until I got a good offer from SKY. I bought a Youview box at Christmas for the bedroom. The catch up TV on it is pretty good. Was happy to move it to the livingroom and use it as the main box. If you shop around you can get Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and Now TV for around £15 per month. I have all 3 apps built into my LGTV.
Unless your a massive sports fan, freeview and video streaming services are the way to go for value and chouce IMO

And this is where it's no good for people like me, I love my football, and i'm afraid that Sky/Virgin/B.T. have this well tied up.

Unfortunately, this is unlikely to change anytime soon. ITV Digital (the predecessor to Freeview) failed because while they outbid Sky for a lot of football rights, a hacker allegedly employed by NDS, a News Corp subsidiary at the time cracked the encryption used by, amongst others, ITV Digital to protect their pay per view events.

I remember seeing the Panorama programme on that, and if I recall correctly, there seemed to be pretty strong evidence. Why was no action taken?
