I was told by virgin media that I couldn't get Eurosport with a medium package.

That's correct Medium and Medium+ are two different packages

Eurosport SD was always a apart of the 'free' package. When did they change it?

I've never known Eurosport to be in M.
TV M was originally introduced to compete with Freeview, which has never had Eurosport.

Its always been subscription on cable. It was initially FTA on satellite, until Sky came along & persuaded them to join the money grabbers club.

IIRC it was free on analogue satellite, but became subscription with the advent of Sky Digital
