Floods: Over A Month's Rain In 24 Hours

http://news.sky.com/story/1600785/fl...in-in-24-hours

Isnt is a bad time when suddenly bad weather again has caused havoc to certain parts of the UK again.

Thousands of people have been hit by flooding, and the words of one member of Carlisle. Has hit the nail on the head by saying 'Someone has told us porkies again'

The Environment Agency, must tell the government how much they need to protect the country against major floods.

Instead of throwing money to overseas countries for aid, they must pour to use for the UK people.

What will happen if this weather goes over the whole of the UK, we will have floods like last year.

And all the government will say 'we are doing everything we can' absolute rubbish.

Put the money into flood defences for the UK, before thinking of overseas aid

Re: Caught on the hop again - The UK MUST invest

A few months ago, the council, plus various agencies, arranged a local resident meeting on the subject of floods. We live right beside a river that has a bad habit of filling up too much.

Only I turned up!

Nevertheless I took the opportunity to highlight several problems with the flood defences I had noticed, and reported, several times.

It took months for someone to get back to me:

"Yes there is a significant dip in the protective dyke, but there are no funds to repair it".

"Yes, there is a seized outflow valve on the surface drain run into the river, but there are no funds to repair it, and we don't yet know who is responsible for it".

"Yes, the Infra Red monitor camera that monitors debris against the river bridge is still unserviceable, but there are no funds to repair it".

"Yes, the river bridge has to be replaced by a single span bridge to stop debris blocking the river, but there are no funds to replace it".

But they can afford to hold meetings with glossy brochures, charts and computer presentations....

Re: Floods: Over A Month's Rain In 24 Hours

Oh Arthur, foreign aid and flood protection don't come from the same budget. AS I have mentioned in many threads, sneding money to help other countries is important.

There are areas flooded where they had recent improvements made to the protection but they still flooded.

In Rutherglen where I stay a main road has been closed for 24 hrs due to the road flooding and the Clyde over flowing. I do think that if a place is prone to flooding then no matter what measures are put in place, it will still get flooded especially in low lying areas.

Maybe they're hoping it'll fail and then they'll get emergency Govt. funding to put right what's been left to fall into disrepair...

Nope its government's of all persuasions who for a long time did diddly squat and even now not enough is being put into flood protection as much more is needed especially with climate change becoming worse.

Re: Floods: Over A Month's Rain In 24 Hours

As I understand it, quite a few millions were invested up there not too long ago, in Keswick for example, and they failed due to the unprecedented nature of this event. I think we have to accept that to flood proof the entire UK against events as severe as this would cost £billions and of course the only time people are going to think about the return on that huge investment is on the odd occasions when such things happen. You'd then have people whining about the effect the huge and rarely needed flood defences have on their lives and the lack of money for other things which have a much greater effect such as roads...

Re: Floods: Over A Month's Rain In 24 Hours

It was a record breaking event: 14" of rain in 24hrs. The rivers were 5mtrs above normal, do people really expect there to be a barrier each side of the river over 15' tall. I can just hear the squealing about not having a nice view anymore.

With climate change there will be more extreme events many of which could never be protected from flooding, remember Boscastle?

The Netherlands spend 5 times as much per person on flood defence as we do. #JustSayin

They're at a far greater risk than the UK, we've seen that all the way back to 1953.

The Netherlands without their dikes and maintaining them. Sea level and whatnot.

I can't deny they've done a pretty brilliant job though and there'd be lessons to be had from them.

tbf, that's because over 26% of their land is below sea level, with another 29% less than 1 metre above sea level (Schipol Airport is 4 metres below sea level...).
