It is quite common in offices I visit. You have to get used to turning the wifi on/off on your mobile to connect to the best AP from where you are, and not hang onto the first 2.4G it found... Maybe some devices automatically roam between the bands?

Cause it's pretty much the norm in ... well...Actually I dunno. It's normal in corporate/enterprise environments. There's not much advantage in a home environment. But it seems every other ISP does it too.

Re: Just got the SuperHub 3

Devices are supposed to be smart enough to use the band with the best signal available.

Some routers are also smart enough to kick devices off a band when they get a crappy signal and another should be available. I know my Asus running Merlin has the option, particularly useful when moving from one AP to another.

Neither is part of the 802.11 specifications or WiFi certifications.

Wifi Performance is better than SH2 for sure.

I've been playing Black Ops 3 today (wired connection) with Plusnet and Virgin and there is about a 20ms increase in latency on the latter. Might look to setup a proxy for better performance.

Throughput wise hit the 200Mbit+ at any time of the day.

I am afraid that doesn't look good to me I assume 54(dBμV) is close to maximum and one upstream has dropped to a lower modulation to improve SNR?

There's another set of upstream stats above using 16QAM, lower QAM has more robust error correction? Strange upstream power always same on both channels.

How did you get the TBB ping monitor if not in modem mode - comment earlier no option to respond to ping? Is your connection always very busy to explain the lousy ping spikes - but at least no packet loss?

You need to turn off the firewall to get a TBB working, also remember the SH3 will get more firmware updates to fix things that are wrong, atleast i hope it will!

I turned off the firewall for now as mentioned. I am barely using the connection, there are no machines connected to it most of the day. Still have Wifi on my Plusnet connection and only the one wired PC on VM.

So yeah it's not looking great, might give them a call later today to double check the power levels.

Edit:

Just done a quick ping test to the first hop for me : haye-core-2a-xe-230-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.8.113]

Ping statistics for 62.253.8.113:
Packets: Sent = 118, Received = 118, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 9ms, Maximum = 67ms, Average = 14ms

Can immediately see there is an issue there between me and VM's own network. So yeah I'll be giving them a call.

Doesn't matter if it's part of the spec or not, a lot of devices will attempt to lock onto the best signal. Our Ubiquity stuff broadcasts a single SSID over both frequencies and will kick devices off that have a poor signal. I'll take screenshots next time I'm logged in.

Looks like there are extensions to the IEEE standards to improve the roaming experience - but maybe these are just being promoted by Apple products?:-

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202628

I've seen a setting for "roaming aggressiveness" in windows Intel clients. There are apps for Android to reduce the tendency to hang on to a weak signal - they didn't work for me just caused regular disconnections.

New Asus Boadcom routers have a feature for "Smart Connect" which is supposed to help distribute clients across available frequencies.

Do we know anything about the SH3 wireless chipset or advanced router functions?

What does your TBB look like?

Edit i see you have already posted it!

That is how the TBB looks when on 16 channels, until VM figure it all out.

Well my Samsung Galaxy Note often connect to my 2.4GHz network, even though it normally connects to the 5GHz network.

Wow... they shouldn't have really rolled it out until it was figured out -_-
Do you know if it's ICMP only ?

Thanks.

All i can say is they need to update the firmware, no idea when that will happen.
