Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

I just moved house and was upgraded from 152Mbps to 200Mbps as part of the deal. We've gone from 2x 64QAM upstream at the old address to 2x 16QAM at the new address (two streets away).

I also note that on the old package we got 100Mbps real world from a 152Mbps connection. Now we're on 200Mbps at the new address, we get 150Mbps real world. Hopefully one day they'll upgrade the top tier to 300Mbps then I can finally get 200Mbps... Makes my head spin lol.

Customer expectation vs ISP reality.

Hence the 'lol'. I get a better quality connection tethered to my mobile phone (80 down / 40 up)!

ISP cutting corners on capacity versus customer expectation based around experiences with most other ISPs and/or those in somewhere like the USA or even Ireland.

I hear HFC having a bad reputation in parts of the U.S. with customers widely complaining about sub-2Mbps speeds.

Indeed. Average speeds across the country on the FCC tests are very good though. Generally smaller mom and pop local cable companies who don't want to upgrade their plant that are the issue. There are still odd areas with no DOCSIS 2 or 3 services.

Ireland actually has the heaviest users in the LG family, and claim the following:

Quote:
Virgin Media Broadband
Ireland’s ultra fast broadband:
Offering speeds of 240Mb expected average speed during peak times of at least 180Mb on a wired connection.
That selling 240Mb as the only package.

Virgin Media UK manage ~110Mb on a 152Mb service on a wired connection.

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

Just now had a film download at 24.8MBs; that is almost 200Mbs. The whole file of 4.37Gb downloaded in less than 4 minutes.

This is one satisfied customer. The good thing about this is that I will only have hogged my local street broadband for 4 minutes.

Thanks, Ben. I was hoping that my upgrade date prediction of Jan - March would mean going onto one of these new shiny CMTS' with all the bells and whistles!

Hopefully Leeds will catch up sooner or later :P

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

Since my upgrade to 200Mbps (which I never, ever get) I keep getting these errors about an update file repeated through the network logs:

Any ideas anyone? It's a newly supplied SH2AC, software V1.01.29 (my old SH2 was worse for wear so the installer swapped it out for us as part of the house move).

I get the same with the SH2. I had a thought that it may be to do with the next firmware update that I believe was pulled because it didn't work.

Your speed boost is on the way...

Your speed upgrade will be ready to take your connection from up to 100Mbps to up to 150Mbps. It's all thanks to DOCSIS® 3 - the magic in our cables.

Look out for it between July 2016 and December 2016.

I'd be concerned if there were bells and whistles on a CMTS.

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

Anyone know what's up with the word Vivid with regards to the new broadband speeds?

Are they being sponsored by "The World Leader In Adult Entertainment"?
