TiVo Connect TiVo to Super Hub via WiFi wireless network

This is similar to the setup guide on the TiVo. The TV is not in the same room as the superhub, and powerline adapters while a nice idea is not something I have invested in. I have a wireless dongle, is there any chance I can use this instead of an ethernet connection?

No you really need to use an ethernet cable to connect the TiVo to your home network.

It depends what you want to do. If its your only TiVo then powerline adapters are the easiest to use. My second Tivo is connected to the network by wifi as the powerline adapters were to slow to allow streaming. It took a bit of fiddling to make streaming work. I had to connect both tivos to the same switch before there was a fast enough path to keep the tivos happy.

I agree with Stephen that Ethernet is the best way to go. Its simpler but in my case I avoided having to lay an unsightly cable and so upset the wife.

I use Solwise 500 Homeplugs with pass-through so you can still use the plug socket. They work fine and I've never had a problem but in the case of homeplugs, you need to make sure you are on the same electrical circuit for your house, so older properties can be a problem.

I'd recommend before any investment looking into just what extras you get by connecting a Tivo to your home network to see if the investment is worth it.

I tried plugging it into my windows 7 PC and there apart from a light on the adapter there was no recognition that it was plugged in. The same with the TiVo.

I see that there may be a basic problem of the TiVo not having way to allow the WDNA3100's software to install.

With regards to why I would want to use it is because of the clunkyness of the TV remote's keypad vs a keyboard and even vs an iPad.

I'd been told the TiVo was capable of being controlled via any device on the network. I'm using TV anywhere which (AFAIK) allows me to watch TV on 2 connected devices.

Its just ease of use for zero outlay was why I wanted it.

On a side note, I paired an iPad via the youtube app to the TV but when I went to demonstrate it I had to enter a passcode again. Is this intended? Shouldn't it remember that its been paired before?

Try a wireless bridge or an old router with firmware that will let it act as such.

Connect this to the TiVo by standard Ethernet and it will (once configured) wirelessly connect to your router/SHUB and doesn't need any software on the TiVo.

I use one to attach a network printer to my LAN. I already had one and saved buying the wireless module for the printer.

You can connect TiVo to your home network wirelessly using a device such as the Netgear WNCE2001.

Well its not wrong at all.

Ethernet is the best and most of the time the simplest way to connect.

I never said you CAN'T connect wirelessly!

Sorry, you said 'you really need to use an Ethernet cable' which precludes any other method of connection.

No not really.

I could say you really have to play this game or you really need to try this rum.

Doesn't mean you can't try others just that it's good so you should try it.

I never actually stated you can't use another connection method just that to use an Ethernet is the best way.

Yes you'll need to connect your Tivo to your network to use the remote functionality in the TV Anywhere app.

You don't need to connect your tivo to your network to watch shows on your device or indeed use your device for remote recording or managing recordings etc...

However if you don't have any hardware that will allow your Tivo box to your network I'm afraid some outlay is required. A usb dongle doesn't work as far as I know.

I stopped using the youtube app on the TiVo as the pairing turned unto a mess with it either doing as you describe or it would frequently start playing, then stop, relaod youtube and then start playing again. The Youtube app on my other connected devices make a much better job of pairing. In answer to you questions no it shouldn't and yes it should.
