Very similar here.

I watch the football live, pretty much everything else I watch is recorded or from other offline sources.

The rest of the family do tend to watch some programmes while they are on, and record the rest - probably about a 40/60 split (live/recorded) atm.

Yes, spiderplant, I understand that broadcast TV is in rude health at the moment, but this isn't going to last forever. The main commercial TV channels are heavily dependent on advertising for their revenues currently and major strategy changes will be necessary in the years to come as (if I am correct), the audience levels for live viewing reduces markedly over the next decade or so.

ITV are certainly reducing their dependence on advertising now, but there is a way to go yet.

So you keep telling us, but fail to provide any evidence to back your claim up.

Broadcast TV works well and people like it. It's not going anywhere.

Well, yes, spiderplant, but unfortunately nobody can actually prove something like that.

I guess we will just have to watch this space. I'm sure we will come back to this in another 10 years to see how things are going!

It seems to me ITV simply need to buy/commission better programmes. In my eyes, the vast majority of programmes they show are just incredibly poor. Their recent BBQ program, for me, gives a clear example of happy they are to accept sub-standard programs. It simply lacks any tension and failed to hold my attention, unlike GBBO, which is streets ahead of it. Failing that, they could always go in for more sports rights with other broadcasters (6 nations deal) or they could just have a specific film channel (similar to C4 and Film4.)

Speaking of C4, it's interesting how C4 is not mentioned in the article. I wonder if their viewing figures and finances are strong?

EDIT:

Oh, I timeshift just about everything. Not much is live, although I often hold off watching the start of a recorded live program for 20-30 mins just so I can skip the ad's and still watch the end the same time as everyone else.

As you well aware OB, I think things will be much the same in ten years.

If they are not, people will simply be paying considerably more money to lots of different companies, just to watch the same content we currently do now. Also, businesses will be forcing adverts on us we can't skip via the streaming sites.

Be careful what you wish for OB, it might just happen.

Re: Timeshifted viewing

We favour recording non BBC programs when they clash then watch the other when the BBC on clashes.

Or even if its a non BBC one we then fastward through the adverts

I'm not wishing for it, Harry. However I can see it coming.

It's pretty clear that posters on this forum are doing a lot of time shifted viewing, so the likely future is staring us in the face.

Which just shows how atypical this forum is.

Timeshifting has reached saturation - if you want to do it, nothing is stopping you. The same happened with HD, and streaming won't be far behind.

The ability to timeshift is readily available, it is true, but habits are only changing slowly at present.
