VM launches 1Gb service to 300 business premises in Manchester
"The company will announce on Wednesday that more than 300 buildings in the city’s Northern Quarter will be provided with broadband that Virgin Media Business promises will be the fastest and most reliable available. Each building will have a 1GB fibre connection which can be split between its tenants."
"Customers will pay a £199 or £249 monthly fee for a 50MB or 100MB connection."

I think it's because they're new premises not previously connectable to VM.

It's different in the way its being provided. They will have a circuit installed into a building a the small businesses can get access to this circuit. So instead of a circuit into each separate business they will have access to a circuit provided into the building making the cost lower and the business can claim subsidy from the goverments superconnected cities scheme

We would have killed for something like that in our building, we're paying more than 3x the price for a 50mbit leased line currently.

So its not really 1Gb to the customers then, as its just to the building, then split in to standard 50Mb ans 100Mb connections.

Agreed, as others have pointed out it's the substantial cost saving that's important here, not the speed of the line to the premises.

Interesting. Rather the opposite of BT's original policy with FTTPoD, in that the latter was explicitly prohibited from being shared or even installed in MDUs.

The vast majority of businesses really don't need more than 50 or 100mbit, especially if it's symmetrical.

BT has so much fibre in our building, it's ridiculous. Every time a new leased line is purchased, they deploy a completely new fibre line, they don't reuse even the defunct fibre that's in the basement.
Which of course means it takes months to get said line installed.

Hopefully this will change. I read something a couple of months ago that said they will be trying to re-use inactive fibre. They do at least know it's a huge waste.
