That's a good idea and something i've been thinking about for a while, i spose i should get myself in gear and monitor the senders of said email and change them.

It's not an easy thing to switch, but you're far better off doing it on your own terms than at some point in the future if/when Virgin arbitrarily decides to shut your email down - or just plain looses it all.

I don't know how LG's email system works, but at least on Virgin's Google-based platform, you can set up a rule to forward all emails to another address. It's the easiest way to migrate

Likewise, you can tell a Google account (and presumably Hotmail, etc.) to periodically check older accounts and download emails from them. You have options.

Re: Looks like Virginmedia have fallen out with Google

I did this years ago, after one NTLWorld email outage too many. I got a mac.com email address, set up a forward from NTLWorld, and never looked back. I still have the same Apple email account now, about 12-13 years later.

I would imagine VM have been paying Google for its email service.
Thanks. I did not know that.

My company use Google for its mail solution as does the local council here.

We pay $5 a month per person for this - 30gb storage, unlimited google docs, hangouts and video meetings.

For us, this has been a brilliant solution

We use Microsoft at ours, we use Office 365, a bit more expensive at I think $12.50 per user per month, but it comes with all kinds of extras, 50GB mailbox per user, hosted exchange, full office, Lync (Skype for Business) and all kinds.

Re: Looks like Virginmedia have fallen out with Google

I have used GMail for a long time and have it set up to grab email in my VM boxes. So I get a nice single inbox but can also have a look at what it's pulled from each of the VM boxes.

As an aside, I have my own domain with mail forwarders set to my Gmail account so if Google starts to do something odd with my mails I can change fairly easily, just change the forwarder. Doesn't help emails sent direct to GMail but most official emails I use the forwarder. This also allows me to setup forwarders for our children so I get copies of emails to my son (and my wife copies to our daughter) - we will stop this as they get older. Also lets me have addresses for grandparents, relatives and so on so if the children want to send emails the addresses are easier for them.

Doesn't matter if it's Gmail, Hotmail (aka Outlook), even Yahoo, anything is better than using your ISP address, which might suddenly stop working because they've arbitrarily decided to switch providers.

Oh and I'd bet cold, hard cash that emails will go missing during this migration - they always do.
indeed, I have lost count of how often I have advised this.

As Kushan said, isp's seem to love changing providers etc. but in addition if you leave the isp you also risk losing the email address.

Even a normal gmail/hotmail account is better than an isp account.

Re: Virgin email moving away from Google

More fun.

Didnt they move to google because they made such a bad job of running their own ?

I dont use my ntl address for much these days, since I run my own e-mail service on one of my servers.

That incredibly stupid and annoying captcha they have now is another factor driving me away from it.

If thats the case, then the wording of the e-mail is very strange.

It certainly implies some kind of issue with google 'forcing' them to move.

Re: Virgin email moving away from Google

It could be as simple as Google raising their prices or something. Who knows.

I suspect it's more to do with the LibGlob merger than anything else.

I hope it's easy to set up in outlook 2013. Took ages when it went over to Google to get all the settings right.

Well the server names should remain the same as is the SSL ports and authentication. IF they do it right it should be seamless for those using mail clients.

In practice of course....

Make sure you've downloaded all the mail as soon as it comes in, I use 10 minute collections. A local copy will help keep you safe.

Spot on, conservative estimates puts the cost of using Google for commercial email with thousands of accounts into the tens of millions. If LG have an in-house system already bought and paid for, it makes sense to migrate.
