50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

Hi,

I'm on the VM 50mb broadband, and although I get full 50mb on speed test the web browsing seems a little laggy.

Could it be anything to do with my upstream power levels being too low? Also, my SH2 co-ax cable has a (forward) 20dB attenuator as my property is very close to the cabinet and the tech used one of the higher taps.

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy

Can you describe what you mean by "laggy"? If you do a ping test, do you get high or intermittently high pings?

Set up one of these to get a good graph of your connection: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

Honestly though, if your latency and speeds are fine, then any "lag" you're feeling is probably your computer.

When I say laggy I mean websites at times seem to load slowly. Ping test to bbc.co.uk averages around 28ms.

Have you tried a different browser? Preferably one without any addons installed or whatever.

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

can you zero those rs errors as well and then we can take a look at them again this evening

Tbh dude I wouldn't start worrying about it atm. I know my connection is absolutely fine but I noticed first thing this morning that most websites weren't loading as fast as they normally do and it has got worse throughout the day. Your connection within VM's network might be mint but you have got to remember that it is Sunday afternoon and loads of people all around the world are sat at home so there might be a heavy load on some sites.

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

I have just spat some squash all over my keyboard. I was typing out "I wouldn't worry about it too much dude, it has just taken me 3 seconds to load this page" and then I remembered I had some torrents running so I had a quick look to see how much juice they were taking up and nearly died:

I know it is a bit small but it says 1.9MB/sec up and it is holding between 1.8 and 1.9

^^ That would probably account for your slow connection!

Here's another download stats taken just now after light browsing (which probably doesn't help much):

I suppose why the browsing has felt a little better too. Oh well, I'll keep an eye on it, although the lag seems to have been prominent since the latest firmware upgrade (v2.01.03) a few nights ago...

Thanks for your help though...

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

create a thinkbroadband ping monitor like Kush has suggested above and then we'll be able to see if you have got any on going issues. You get a nice pretty graph of your pings which will look like this:

If all is well it should like mine does for the last couple of hours where it is pretty much flat green with a bit of blue and yellow running along the bottom

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

On their website they state that you need a static IP for the monitor to work. VM do not provide static IP so how did you manage to get it to work?

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

your ip is semi-static. Unless something goes wrong, you'll pretty much always gets the same ip back when your router renews it. I have had the same ip for at least two years and I haven't done anything special to keep it. If I wanted a different one I would leave my router offline a couple of days in the hope that the ip gets given to someone else.

Re: 50Mb connection feels laggy (power levels?)

Kinda scary getting so orgasmic you spit a drink over your keyboard because a torrent is apparently going faster than normal.

A bunch of explanations why so not going to speculate just yet. I'm not sure what is being trialled and where, or even if it's just a simple technical issue.
