He would take annual leave, like everyone else...
Not trying to do an Arthur here, but when I was damaging my liver/defending my country against the Soviet War Machine, our shifts were :-
Day 1 - 16:00-23:00
Day 2 - 08:00-16:00, 23:00-08:00 (Day 3)
Day 3 (after getting home after finishing shift at 08:00) Day off
Day 4 - 1600-23:00
Day 5 - 08:00-16:00, 23:00-08:00
Day 6 (after getting home after finishing shift at 08:00) Day off
Day 7 - Day off
Day 8 - Day off
Repeat until physiological and psychological exhaustion kicks in....
In addition to this, every 3 months you would pull Guard Duty between one of the Day 2 or Day 5 shift patterns, meaning you worked a 24 hour shift, and every 6 months, you would have to give up one of your Day 7 or 8 days off for Ground Defence Training (and we had it easy compared to some of the combat units).
Get some in!!!

Sounds a lot cushier than some others against same Soviets. Mine was
Day1, 13:00 to 19:00
6 hours off
01:00 to 07:00
6 hours off
Repeat for 3 months

Re: Unions / TFL need to sit down for talks overnight
Well, if you will go to sea......
Remember the old Armed Forces adage - "If you can't take a joke, you shouldn't have joined up!".
However, for 3 years, we had a GSFG Tank Regiment less than a mile from our Married Quarters*, and they were closer to the Armoury than we were - so we were probably continuously more in "Clear and Present Danger" than most RN personnel...
* RAF Gatow - the wired fence part of the Berlin Wall was our airfield boundary...
