Ireland votes on Gay Marriage

http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...age-referendum

Quote:
Polls have opened in Ireland, where voters are making history as the republic becomes the first nation to ask its electorate to legalise gay marriage.

More than 3m voters have been invited to cast ballots in Ireland’s 43 constituencies, with the result to follow on Saturday. Polling stations opened at 7am BST and they close at 10pm.

The voting follows a hard-fought and occasionally rancorous battle between conservative and liberal Ireland.
Find out the results tomorrow. Yes is ahead by some way in the polls but Yes campaigners are concerned of a turnout imbalance (i.e Yes voters are less inclined to be actual voters) and the prospect of 'shy-Nos'. Additionally the referendum on divorce also showed a strong Yes vote which translated to a very close Yes on the actual day.

The numbers are high enough though to accommodate a pretty large margin of error and still be Yes.

Definitely, here's hoping our Irish cousins show the UK how it should be done.

It's already legal in the UK. Also:

Re: Ireland votes on Gay Marriage

They will vote no by a large margin as it is a strict catholic country.

Still Irish gay people can get married in any other EU country with relaxed laws.

Re: Ireland votes on Gay Marriage

Well hopefully Ireland can bring their table position a little higher by voting yes.

There's no reason why anyone should face any discrimination based on their sexuality, none at all and I'm proud the UK leads the way in Europe on this.

Well, those lovely massively accurate opinion polls shows a slight majority to the yes camp actually but that probably means it'll be voted down by a landslide.

Hopefully it will go through however.

Re: Ireland votes on Gay Marriage

Looking at Damien's graph there still seems to be a awful lot of prejudice and lack of rights in Eastern Europe especially.

Not exclusively though.

Sadly wealthy, smaller nations like San Marino, Switzerland and Monaco are all bad on this subject too, and the very much eastern European Croatia are ahead of the curve too.

Russia on the other hand? Yeesh. I expected the Scandanavian nations to be higher up than this though personally.

Re: Ireland votes on Gay Marriage

Let's hope they can drop the religious dogma for a little while and stop obsessing over gay marriage. Given the Catholic church's recent history worrying about homosexuality due to Catholicism seems odd anyway

Less worry about 'gay marriage' and simply be concerned with 'marriage'.

Re: Ireland votes on Gay Marriage

I think that's what people want - marriage without a prefix.

The same rights as everyone else.

Wise words from a Reverend in Denmark. Be awesome if those opposing this in Ireland for religious reasons stepped back and thought of this side.

Will they want equal rights to divorce too?
