Agreed however HD is now more popular than ever just look how many Sky subscribers now take it , a Sky Sports fan with the family bundle is facing a £4 increase some 9 months after the last one with probably more to come at some point with the telecoms side.

I've had subscription TV for many years but now more than ever I'm thinking of ditching the lot , I maybe tempted with a decent discount at contract end but I'm no longer prepared to pay anywhere near full whack.

That Daily Mail article has some interesting observations:

Daily Mail Normally, Sky would announce any price rise in September, however making the announcement then would have coincided with its loss of the TV rights for the Champions League to BT. It would have been obvious to viewers that they were being asked to pay more for less.

The inflation-busting increases will come into effect on June 1 and coincide with the middle of the latest series of Game of Thrones. Fans will effectively have to agree to the higher subscription.

Sky offered a bizarre explanation for the timing of the announcement, claiming it was necessary to comply with regulations imposed by the Advertising Standards Authority. In fact, the ASA has absolutely no role in the timing of such announcements.

French giant Vivendi 'considers reach for Sky'

The French media conglomerate Vivendi is looking at a possible acquisition of pay-TV group Sky, as one of several options to expand the reach of its own TV group Canal Plus, three sources familiar with the matter said.

Vivendi has turned its attention to Sky after reviewing smaller pay-TV targets in Turkey and other fast-growing markets in Europe, one of the sources said.

Sky has a market value of £17.6bn ($26bn) but could cost Vivendi as much as £28bn including debt, the sources said.
