Virgin Media has signed a three-year extension to its agreement with TiVo, keeping the advanced set-top box in UK homes until at least 2018.

And others said it was on its death bed just waiting to die.

Under the new agreement Virgin has committed to the development of next-generation solutions from TiVo.

Too much bloated software on too slow a CPU. A very common problem.
Rewriting critical functions more efficiently could do a lot but it'll never happen as the push is always for more bells and whistles and to be rolled out yesterday.

The recent update dumped the flash-based interface for a HTML5 one. I'd say that counts as rewriting critical functions.

Possibly but I'd bet there's lots more bloat that could be streamlined.

Because LG's key staff were briefing analysts behind the scenes that they wanted horizon rolled out in all their markets to gain cost efficiencies.
I am surprised to say the least. I didn't realise the deal was expiring as I thought it had several years still to run.
Be interested what the City bods say to LG at the next quarterly meeting.

Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
.... no idea, I've never seen it beyond the pics/vids available on the internet.
It looks like open media software such as Kodi or Media Portal. So, based on that, it looks good. But until/if it comes to the UK, we won't know.

Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
I've just had a google and found this video showing it off:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzHF2P2ZeeY
I have to admit, it does look nice. I get why they called it Horizon. It seems nippy, not sure I like the layout but its at least faster than TiVo by a mile.
The owner of that states it has 4 Ethernet ports. I can't even fathom why you'd want 4 Ethernet ports unless it was also the router/hub. That I don't like.

Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
.... It does look good and yes it is a router too because unlike VM, the Horizon box is used to stream channels to mobile devices, pcs etc. Whereas on VM, they come off the headend.
I've used my own media software for years and its superior to tivo in every way. But the only way to get the HD channels from VM is to have their damn box, I can't just feed the channels through to my own setup.
