Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

MB probably thinks this, because Spike is going to be launching on that same channel number:

Spike TV UK confirmed channel numbers-:
Freeview 31
Sky 160
Freesat 141
From 15 April

VM shouldn't be throwing money at SD channels...Should be investing in HD channels, new technology and possibly even faster broadband

With people buying newer, bigger HD/4K teles they don't want to be watching fuzzy channels anymore.

Absolutely bang on mate, if they hadn't put so much friggin dross on their TV channels, we could be looking at a far better service imo.

I agree to a certain degree; especially 'crappy' SD channels and VM can't afford to be left behind technology wise.

But 4k won't show any significant benefit unless the TV is 60 inches or above, and how many lounges in typical homes can comfortably accommodate 60 inch plus screens?

For the average home, 4k is not necessary and just another marketing tool for equipment manufacturers to sell more goods. They're still smarting from the fact that 3D didn't take off as they hoped, with people rushing out to replace their perfectly good TV with a 3D version.

I understand there are those without a HD tv, but they won't be spending as much because they won't be able to get the best out of their subcription fee.

It doesnt make sense to have a non HD tele and be on the VIP/Big Daddy package.

VM would probably also find, customers with HD/4K tv have access to a wider range of their services (HD/3D/4K content when it comes) will spend more per month than those without a HD tele.

Therefore they should be encouraging people to want to access the better picture quality of HD, but without making them break the bank so they can afford to purchase a TV to go with it. Afterall, as a media company, don't you want your customers to be able to enjoy the best of what your product(s) has to offer?

The price of 4K is coming down, but there are lots of other areas in which VM can improve. I agree, they certainly cannot afford to be left behind.

Is this defo the case mate? I was thinking of getting a new 55" 4K TV, not right now, maybe in a few months or so when prices should be lower, but if you're saying that it will be a waste of time because it ain't 60", then I'll have to re-think what would be the best TV with the best PQ.

Depends on how good your eyes are. I don't see much difference between SD and HD on our 42" Sony from normal viewing distance. OH says it's better so I trust him. Close up HD is obviously better.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

I have a 55" set and can clearly see the difference however to be fair it's in a small room meaning we are sat very close to it.

2 things:

1. Read recently that LG aren't concerned about 4k and are concentrating on OLED.
2. Bought an AV Receiver & speakers from a nation-wide chain selling AV gear recently and whilst I was waiting to pay I turned to see a large (guess would be 55") 4k Sony TV with what appeared to be a bar down the middle. I asked what it was and was told that the left hand side of the screen was showing 4k and the right hand side was showing 1080p. Said I couldn't see any difference and the guy behind the counter said, "A lot of people say that, depends what's on". I was about 6' away.

Also interesting, from a marketing point of view, that the industry has gone from 720 to 1080 to 4k -not 2160.

He was wrong in that it would only be the case when sat a certain distance from the TV. The farther away you are the less noticeable resolution increases are.

4k is easily noticeable on a 55" as long as you don't sit too far back.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

Interestingly Spike have picked up the tights to Justified. Sky have the VOD rights currently. We're still waiting for someone in the UK to air the final season.

They seem to have some decent shows alongside the reality junk. Again still waiting for a UK showing of the final season of Sons of Anarchy.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

My LG 4K TV is only 49" but I have noticed a significant improvement in picture clarity & definition over my previous LG HD set, even when just upscaling.

Had a few visitors mentioning it as well unprompted. At the end of the day its a personal view. "In the eye of the beholder" as they say.

Would also mention when watching a couple of 4K movies recently. Observed one appeared much better than the other. So presume other factors can come into play.
