Maybe they should introduce BBC2 +1 to use up the spectrum? If they aren't going to use it, perhaps the BBC could raise much needed funds by renting this prime time slot out to another broadcaster (if this would be allowed).

BBC1+1 is not a goer now, so I can't see that your proposed BBC2+1 would be either.
I would not be surprised if BBC3 was allowed to continue in the slot once all this fuss is over. Much ado about nothing!

It is because of the new deal signed between VM and Fox...
This is from MB's blog
" FOX + and FOX HD on the move on Virgin Media
Just days after of parent company 21st Century Fox rumours of being in talking with Discovery Communications, Inc about an takeover.
Virgin Media has signed an new broadcasting deal with FOX International Channels (FIC).
As part of the new deal sees FOX + moving to Virgin Channel 158 with FOX HD moving to Virgin Channel 199"
I didnt know when the channel was moving, but if it already has, that was pretty quick.

If there was an HD swap you'd have to learn even more!

The protest over BBC 3 being removed from OTA and made online only doesn't bode well for Freeview channels going online in the near future

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1
It will be interesting to see if this app will be made available through the TIVO later this year. This would be a useful addition to our services.
http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2015/...igital-future/
The BBC has set out a new vision for the digital era with a new initiative designed to bring a tailored experience to BBC Online.
myBBC will launch this autumn with a personalised app that is designed to make sure the user doesn’t miss anything that is important to them from the launch of new series, the start of matches, traffic and breaking news.
“It’s the start of a real transformation – the myBBC revolution. How to reinvent public service broadcasting through data. But we will always be doing it in a BBC way – not telling you what customers like you bought, but what citizens like you would love to watch and need to know,” said BBC director-general Tony Hall.
In a blog post Phil Fearnley, Director of myBBC and Homepage, explained that some of the work was already in place through the BBC Weather app, which automatically finds your location and the BBC Playlister that explores music from across the BBC’s programmes or recommended by DJs, actors and expert curators.
“We will make the BBC online feel personal and relevant to you, by linking up our content and launching new features and functionality to help serve each and every one of you better,” he said. “You’ll be able to create a BBC experience that you control, recognises you as an individual, and brings you the best of our content based on what we know you’ll love.”
Fearnley made it clear that while the BBC would be asking users to sign in, the data would be going no further that the provision of relevant content.

Well spotted.
No idea why its happened. VM have shown no inclination as yet for a HD swap, so don't know. Perhaps when this new deal was signed, FOX just asked for their +1 to be next to their main channel. I doubt its anything more "interesting" than that. (More's the pity)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1
I know what all the DNPs are ..... the Virgin TVNowhere - sorry Anywhere - app will have its release for Android Lollipop exactly 6 months after the software was launched (which will mean a launch date of 5 May). Also it will become available on 3G/4G exactly 4 years after SkyGo became available to their subscribers on their mobiles (which will mean a release date of 6 July). Of course, both events are extremely unlikely/improbable.

The general belief is that this may be in preparation for new channels.

Sadly, I was being sarcastic. As this would be a service to paying customers we know it won't happen.
