Joining Arqiva's Connect service will cost them money. It is likely the service will become part of the iPlayer service. With the majority of new TV's now accessing Smart content as standard, this is an obvious progression. Who knows, it may even become available via the TiVO app.

Watch it on your TV if you have the capability to do so.

Just because you have a TV doesn't mean you watch (or record to watch later) live TV.
Without a licence you can only:

Watch on demand – including catch-up TV and on demand previews – through services like BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5, BT Vision, Virgin Media, Sky Go, Now TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
Watch on demand movies from providers like Sky, Virgin Media, BT Vision, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.
Watch recorded films and programmes either from a disc (e.g. DVD or Blu-ray) or downloaded from the internet.
Watch on demand internet video clips through services like YouTube.
Play video games.
All of the above can be done on a TV

Anyway this is way off topic, sorry mods.

Final warning, this thread is NOT about discussion of the TV license.

There is a thread about it already on the forum.

The last time that I ascertained the cost of SA to VM was something like 22p per week per subscriber (I posted it in here). Maybe the new owners of VM are prepared to pay it or have negotiated a reduction??

Maybe they would let the BBC use their service for nothing, kind of like a loss leader to encourage others to use their service (there don't seem to be many takers so far and I think some have already closed)??

Plus they would have had to cave into Sky's asking price too. If VM got Atlantic at a reduced price, all the other suppliers would want it at that price too.

I completely disagree. It is fairly well known I think that negotiations of this nature can take a long time to agree.

It seems to me that negotiations were well under way in the late summer of 2013, and Sky were trying to get VM to take a new channel (Sky Bravo). I think that it is a very likely possibility that VM decided to stand firm against taking that channel until there was an agreement on Sky Atlantic.

The launch of the Now Tv box I believe was a last ditch attempt by Sky to wrangle as many people as possible from potential subscribers before finally allowing VM to screen the channel, and it was necessary to wait until the end of the Christmas rush before conceding this.

Of course, no-one really knows, but my guess at what is happening here is legitimate. I think that using Sky Atlantic as the USP has just about been done to death now and Sky will welcome the additional advertising revenue that will result in the channel coming to VM.

I think that January will be a very interesting month, but as I said, let's wait and see.

Of course SA on Now TV was a money spinner.

Yeah, negotiations can take a long time, but I am amazed you think it has taken a year and a half to agree on a fee. Plus, as I have said before, there is/was probably very little negotiating going on considering Sky want one fee and fee only. As I said before, if VM get a good deal, all the other suppliers will want the same deal and Sky will not let that happen.

January may well be interesting, but if SA launches, I think it will be down to the customer survey e-mails that were sent out a few months ago, not because of potential negotiations which started 18 months ago.

Either way, if VM get SA, the end will surely justify the means. .

Fair enough Andy. There were numerous options given to us via the e-mail. I can't remember them all, the one that stood out the most for me was the possibility of Netflix being bundled in with XL.

I think some changes will be coming with the rises, purely through the wording of the first page of the survey, but I will not be disappointed or surprised if nothing materializes. Ultimately, every company has to stay profitable and cover their increases in costs first and foremost. If VM cant afford to add anything to the service, I, personally, would rather pay more to keep VM afloat than have VM waste money on SA.

And I disagree with pretty much all that you said here

I fail to see how you have concluded that these negotiations take a long time, if any negotiation are even taken place, I don't think it well known because negotiations take as long or as short as possible depending on co operation of side. Based on official releases sky reckon they gave a "fair" price , VM thinks not (and neither does any other provider). In that scenario I reckon talks are had but certainly not involving SA.

I fail to see what this channel sky bravo anything to do with this; the missing HD channels that have arrived or about to arrive have demonstrated agreements can be made without SA let alone a mystery non existent channel that was Rumoured to be starting, I fail to see that's it's non agreement with VM would fail to launch, ITV encore can without VM why not this bravo

I fail to see how NowTV is as you describe a last ditch attempt; TV over Internet is very much the future and sky is using this as a method to ensure its presence in this new(ish) market in light of new competition against its traditional model. Now offers a new market audience who don't wish to take expensive contracts.

i give you the fact that no one knows, and maybe deals with missing HD might see a new light of co operation but unless advertisers or regulation force sky hand to ensure bigger coverage or HBO requires it they ain't going to budge soon on this
