This argument that if the BBC took adverts it would take advertising revenue away from other commercial stations is `old hat` and just isn`t true. The beeb said this long before there was multi commercial channels but now they`re here I see ITV are still around and doing okay. So are the others. Why can`t the beeb be partly funded by adverts and as a subscription channel anyway? Like sky 1,Watch,Alibi etc.

If you look at other countries where the erosion of license fee has occurred and a former state broadcaster takes advertising all those things happen. It weakens the investment in programming to only have advertisers, reduces the content available and quality.

So, you analyse every advert on ITV for every product that you buy and then make sure that you buy a brand that isn't advertised?

Of course not! The point I`m trying to make though is I can choose what products I want to buy and compare prices to get the best deal. Can I do this with the licence fee? Can I shop around for the best deal? No I have no choice, if I want to watch tv,regardless whether it`s the beeb channels or not,or use my pc,or even my mobile, I have to pay the BBC for the privillage of doing so. That`s what I object to - NO CHOICE!.

Do we have any potential launches in January other than the two sky hd channels? I'm trying to think what we are really missing out on. Other than the channel which must not be named *cough* Atlantic
Part of thinks it may come soon. This is not based on any evidence other than sky have had it exclusive for a while, the impact of it is dwindling, they need additional advertising funds to add to the coffers for EPL bid, now tv has taken off for people who wanted Atlantic that way, a few people get sky tv for Christmas so announcing it coming to VM in January after that's all died down makes sense. Plus it would make sense as to why sky sports news and sky news hd were kept back till new year
Keep the contract secret, wait till the Christmas now tv and sky subscriptions have died down and then in January you can have the lot... Would make sense for the price increase?
Fantasy? A nonsense theory? Who knows! I'm sure the adventure we will embark on next year on here will be wild enough ..
|
It's not a nonsense theory at all, Vince, and in fact I have been saying this, much to the annoyance of a sector of this forum, for some time.
However, the talks that have taken place with Sky have been in secret and so it is impossible for anyone to say for sure, but I think things started to change last year, and the results of these negotiations may well be seen next month. If my suspicions are correct, we should be getting all the missing Sky channels, including Atlantic and Sky 1+1.
However, if this doesn't happen early in the New Year, I think I will finally have to concede defeat on this theory which is based on earlier reports that have been discussed in this forum. I do think these reports have some basis in fact but I won't be able to prove this until it happens.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 4
People seem to have forgotten that the topic is what channels are coming to Virgin TV,not the TV licence and all the other nonsense everyone seems to be posting. It would also be a lovely idea if the season of goodwill could last beyond the 25th..

If the negotiations are in secret, how do you know they are happening?
i would love to see them but I seen no evidence of any change of circumstance or "negotiations". Maybe you see a glass half full whereas I see a glass half empty but as much as you can wish it there has been no move or stance change from Sky in this matter

I'm quite capable of forming an opinion on the poor management of the BBC and the tv tax without relying on comment from the Sun, etc, thank you very much.
You only have to look at the channel 4 stable to see how public service television can be run by a public organisation but be self-funding.
Re: Maggie's comment I suggest the spirit of goodwill might have lasted longer if people hadn't been told off for wishing each other a Merry Christmas!
@Old Boy, I applaud your optimism, but it isn't going to happen!

Andy, we were responding to the query about why there is a delay in the english regions joining the BBC HD lineup, stb switching. it was for others complaining about the broadcaster. Channel 4 isn't a shining beacon of PSB.
Anyhow Merry Christmas one and all.

The fact that Virgin were in discussions with Sky on the missing Sky channels was reported, but what has been a secret is the state of those negotiations.
It is possible that the deal has been done already, but you can't blame Sky from getting as much traction as possible with the Now TV box and also get the lucrative Christmas period out of the way before announcing anything.
Anyhow, we will soon find out now, one way or the other.

Well, I know that's your view, Dave, but there is no back up reported information that you can point to in order to back up your opinion.
My view is based on information from the Autumn before last and I had good cause to believe that there was a credible reason for thinking that things were changing.
Negotiations can take a long time, and if I'm right, we will hear more about this in January.
Anyway, let's wait and see. Just days to go now.

Lol, still banging on about that one, solitary report. If it happens it probably has very little to do with that report from the autumn before last. Iirc, was that report not about the back haul of internet services?
