Lost Emails?

Hello Everybody,

Anyone else having issues with inbound emails today? My son sent me two emails from the PC downstairs (from his ntlworld address) this afternoon and only one arrived. Suspicious I re-sent his original mail plus 10 tests about 20 minutes ago. Only the re-sent mail has arrived.

My inbox has also generally been suspiciously quiet of late too. I'm in Bury, North Manchester and also use ntlworld. Anyone any clues? I would ask NTL but I've been told I'm not allowed to complain about the email any more.

Re: Lost Emails?

I seem to be losing all my emails that are sent to my bigfoot.com address. I use their mail redirection service. This was working fine until approx noon on Tuesday 7/12.

Re: Lost Emails?

I have managed to change my forwarding address to a freeserve account and I have started to receive emails again.

There is definately something wrong with NTLs SMTP servers not accepting mail from bigfoot.com........

Nope, they just aint arriving. I had a temporary issue this afternoon; the familiar "connection to server interrrupted" but no issues sending since (well, I can't of course confirm my mails have arrived); see thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...5&page=2&pp=15

Just why is NTL's email so unreliable?

Cheers,

Andy

Re: Lost Emails?

Tech support insists there is no problem because two emails they sent arrived, a test from my own address worked and there's nothing on the server. But they can't explain why 11 mails sent from my son's address haven't arrived or bounced back to his address. And Tech Supp are also now punting Customer Services' line that email isn't integral to the broadband service. Might not be to them, but it is to me.

Help!!

Have you tried to narrow this down abit and see at which point it is bouncing.

IE Is it reaching the NTL server and failing to deliver to the inbox or is it bouncing straight away.

You could try to telnet this as below -

To telnet it try the following -

To telnet the mail server:
Click onto Start then Run
type telnet pop.ntlworld.com 110 - press enter
+OK InterMail POP3 server ready.
type user then a space then your user.name - press enter
+OK please send PASS command
type pass then a space then your password - press enter
+OK user.name is welcome here

This logs you into the pop server.

type list.

This will list all the mails on ther server.

Then type quit to close the telnet connection.

Could try sending a few test emails then telnetting it see whats there and then go to your email client and send/receive and see if what you receive matches what you just looked at in the telnet session.

Re: Lost Emails?

Carlingman,

Thanks but Tech Supp have already checked the server and there's nowt on it. The messages haven't bounced back either. It's very peculiar.... and irritating.

Re: Lost Emails?

Apologies to everybody (incl that fella on Tech Support). 'Lost' mails turned up in my Norton spam folder. Yeah I know, I should have checked before...DOH! I'm still perplexed as to how some mails from the same address found there way into my inbox mind, but that's another issue.

Cheers all

Re: Lost Emails?

I have raised this with Bigfoot who advise that NTL must be deleting my emails as they perceive it to be SPAM. This maybe because Bigfoot.com may look like a mail-relay.

I didn't think NTL scanned mail for spam until I saw this from www.ntlworlde.com/help:

ntl launches free anti-virus and anti-spam for all ntlworld email users

Updated: 11 November 2004

ntl is taking a major step to improve online security for all our Internet customers. From the end of November, all email sent and received by customers using the ntlworld email service will be scanned for viruses, and any emails containing viruses will be removed.

Although we are blocking all viruses on ntlworld email, you still need to keep your PC protected with anti-virus software, to prevent becoming infected by viruses received through non-ntl mail services or from websites.

Also, we have begun a programme to eliminate millions of spam messages - or junk email - from ntlworld email services. This will substantially reduce spam in the first instance, but you may still receive some spam.

However, we hope to block the vast majority of unsolicited email, and give you control over how we deal with suspected spam emails destined for your mailbox when this programme is complete next year.

Both of these new services are provided at no cost to customers.

For further information, please visit our FAQs. For general information about spam and viruses visit our Security section.

So it really does look NTL are identifying my mail as SPAM. Is there anyway this can be rectified?

There is no way that this assertion can be proven. There are many ways that e-mail can go missing, this is just one of them. So you might be on a wild goose chase, or you might have a genuine point. Mind you, if bigfoot really are operating open relays (or condoning the operation of open relays on their networks), then you should take your custom elsewhere. There are ways of running a mail forwarding service without the end-product looking like something sent through an open relay. The site pobox.com have articles about this, in their information about SPF.
