Hindu sacrifice of 500,000 animals begins in Nepal
http://www.itv.com/news/2014-11-28/h...gins-in-nepal/
PLEASE BE WARNED THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED - BEWARE
I could not believe what l saw when l read this item.
In the name of religion, sorry, this is sick. killing animals is one thing. BUT 500.000 is sick.
I am relgious, but l am sure this will upset many people as there is no need for this massacre.
Yes, kill one animal for relgious reasons - BUT, all these poor things.

It doesn't happen very often though. So I think that makes it acceptable somehow

The ceremony, which takes place every five years, is believed by worshippers to appease the Hindu goddess of power, in turn bringing luck and prosperity.

Re: Hindu sacrifice of 500,000 animals begins in Nepal
It is indeed barbaric; India have banned it, hence why it's carried out in Nepal.
Pretty grotesque stuff and a sad example of the inhumane dogma that religious beliefs can bring. It's quite horrifying how readily people abandon humanity in the name of a belief that has no robust evidential basis to speak of.
There's a really good reason why I'm so vehemently secular. This kind of behaviour demeans the entire human race. There is no need and no excuse.

Apart from anything else, it is a complete waste of food.

Not aimed at you but it's equally impressive how readily some people will take up the cause of animal welfare when it relates to religious practise, whereas when such cruelty comes up in other contexts they are nowhere to be found.

Glad you said it wasn't directed at me. I'm vehemently opposed to non-stunned slaughter in general regardless of reason.
Both Jews and Muslims can rotate - if we're harvesting living creatures the least we can do is ensure they lose their perception rapidly and humanely rather than letting them bleed out.
Anyone else who desires non-stunned slaughter for dogmatic reasons whether it's cultural, spiritual, whatever, gets treated with equal disdain.

It's frankly a disgrace to the human race. We claim to have come so far since we lived in caves then this kind of bloodthirsty barbarism is tolerated and it fires us right back there as a species.

Re: Hindu sacrifice of 500,000 animals begins in Nepal
We should make a point of why it's bad to kill animals for fun. religious belief, and for the hell of it.
we should sacrifice 500,000 cows and say it's not clever now is it.

That would be why it's a belief, as opposed to a Richard Dawkins lecture.

Regardless it's anathema to a measured, progressive approach to society. Regardless of it being a religious or any other belief it sucks.
Indeed closed-minded dogma in all forms is pap; I'm guilty of it as many are, difference being I don't decide to slaughter animals I just make an ass of myself.

Which one? They're Hindus.
Does go to show that there are lunatic fringes at the edge of every belief system though, even one as fundamentally cool as Hinduism.
