New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
http://news.sky.com/story/1337301/ne...reworks-charge
This is another crazy idea coming from an idiot. Firsly, he puts up the congestion charge. Now he wants to charge people to go and watch the firework display in London on New Year Eve.
IF, you get 100.000 people go into London on the night, that will run into millions of pounds.
What does he think the people of London - fools. He will already get money from Tv companies to filim it for Tv.
I went to the 2000 one, and you could not move for the crowd. So l went down to the last boat on the river, still could not move.
Could it be that he wants to get money for the FREE travel Tfl give on the night.
He claims that they wont make any money out it. This is the man who has become an MP, and a future PM.
He is totally nuts.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
Its really not that crazy.
Other large cities have charged for New Year events for a while now. Glasgow did so before they stopped holding one and as far as I know Edinburgh still does.
Its a better idea too as it limits the amount of people that can gain entry, stopping overcrowding and also stops tickets being wasted.
The money made from it will go in to the clean up afterwards among other useful things. More money to the London council which can in turn be used for good things in the area.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
It was Labours Ken Livingstone who introduced the congestion fee Arthur. Yes we can blame LABOUR for that and everything related to that.
Boris has made a mistake with this. You can see where he is coming from but it's a mistake. Both you and I can probably see this for free anyway Arthur, so not a big deal for us.
Oh, and Boris for PM, because he's a great mayor and mp in general and keeps Labour out. Oh, and to annoy Arthur

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
Can't see selling 100,000 tickets at £10 a piece being a problem for London.
Makes sense making a few quid, the local firework displays in London that I've been to were all chargeable.

Its not a lot to pay and as I said it helps keep the crowd size under control and stops total idiots getting in to ruin it for everyone else.
Edinburgh are currently asking for £20 per ticket for this years event!

So London is better value lol.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
I highly doubt that would cover the cost of the fireworks. Remember there is a lot that will also need to be paid for that event. Staffing, clean up after event and quiet a lot of other things.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
Does London still have free night buses New Years Eve? That must cost someone something.
And I bet insurance is sky rocketing (sorry), especially if there is no control on attendance.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
I think it is a good idea really and limiting the area to just 100k people is wise as what how many came to last event something like 250k?
The only issue I do see which will happen is that 40k of those tickets will probably go to the sponsors of the event.

It was nearly 500,000 to last years event!
According to the article on the BBC News its been done in part due to the strain put upon the transport network and emergency services. So when you look at that limiting the event to 100,000 is a great idea.

A spokesman said last year's display had put "enormous strain on transport and safety infrastructure", and after consulting emergency services and Transport for London the event in its current form was found to be "untenable".
