Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3
Interesting read and comments from Jeremy Darroch and Tom Mockridge
http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...-javid-consult
Quote:
Jeremy Darroch, the chief executive of BSkyB, argued that ITV and Channel 4 should be careful “cherry picking” parts of the US payment system that suit them as the government’s upcoming review poses a threat to some of the benefits they enjoy.
“I’m broadly supportive of deregulation,” said Darroch, speaking at the event. “It is encouraging the Secretary of State reconciles that this is a complex issue and is a connected issue. For deregulation to work it has to work both ways. It is untenable for the commercial PSBs to look across the pond and to cherry pick pieces from an entirely different system. All the considerable benefits, things like guaranteed access to customer bases, EPG prominence, an incredibly valuable benefit. Platform access and EPG prominence are on the table. Be careful what you wish for.”
|
Quote:
Tom Mockridge, chief executive of Virgin Media, said: “We do not, nor have we ever, charged public service broadcasters. Equally, we do not believe viewers should pay an additional tax for the privilege of viewing programming which they have already paid for. Government is right to ignore the overly simplistic calls for another tax on TV viewers and review the current system in more detail. There is a careful balance to strike.”

Some time ago someone on here asked why VM broadcast some channels unencrypted. I responded by saying that it was a condition of the franchises that channels 1-4 (1-5 in some areas) were broadcast in the clear. They then wanted to know why other channels on top of the aforementioned were unencrypted.
I asked my main contact and there were several reasons, including the reason given above, so I guess it seems that the 'new' CEO holds a similar view to his predecessor.

Virgin Media sources has told Media Boy HQ today that Virgin will begin installing a soft launch of a new firmware update to the TiVo boxes.
The update will change the look of the user interface, improve the start up time and offer other small changes/improvements.
To get an idea of the new look if you go to virginmedia.com the colour scheme is the same with the purple background, white text and the new red Virgin Media logo.
A few regions will get it on Tuesday with the majority of the boxes to be updated by October 28th.

Oh God no. The website is horrible, whoever thought that purple went well with white and red. I'd rather stick with the old red background thanks all the same.

The new TiVo colour scheme is so much nicer than the current red and black. Looks much better.
