I think andy_m is saying is that there are larger minorities in the UK (eg the Poles and the French) who don't get programs made in their languages subsidised by all UK licence fee payers. So should the BBC not be catering for these minorities as well?

I guess the issue is that if the BBC and Scottish government did not fund Gaelic language broadcasting then no one would. By contrast, native French speakers have access to some free content and some paid content from France and other French-speaking countries. Could it also be argued that Gaelic is also a native UK language whereas the others mentioned are not as they have their origins outside the British Isles?

Which was exactly my point! Only the BBC are mandated to make it. no other org does make it BUT the actual new programming is about £4 millions and for what you get it is very good value for money. The equivalent on network would cost more (I worked for the BBC regulator so have seen all the figures and keep in touch with those who know!). I think the argument is Gaelic speakers are indigenous to Scotland so take priority, to some populations which are transient over time and do not engage with the BBC. The Gaels have protested since Moses received the 10 commandments for more Gaelic radio and television. Wales got S4C in 1982 Gaels Alba in 2007.

Out of interest is BBC Alba carried on VM outwith Scotland? Anyone dipped in?

Thanks to those for explaining what I meant, and thanks for the answer. I obviously didn't explain myself well enough!

I haven't watched any Alba, although yes, we do get it. I like the fact that you're positive about it being a good way to bring Scotland to the world. I've no issue with that, but not being able to speak Gaelic puts me off watching, so if it's supposed to be an advert for Scotland I think it fails by being inaccessible to all but just shy of 60,000 people. No doubt you'll tell me it's viewing figures nullify my argument!

I guess I just think it's important to understand that modern Britain no longer consists of just it's indigenous peoples and I think embracing the cultures of those we ask to come and live here to improve our nation is just as important as preserving the cultures that made us somewhere that people want to come in the first place. Perhaps that smacks of me taking Scotland for granted a little bit.

I suppose you turn Radio Scotland SportsSound up then for the english commentary!!

They were going to trial a euronews style approach to choice of language. but I think that died a death due to funding.

The channel helps promote the normalisation of gaelic, and stop the decline. so even if you don't understand gaelic, there are learning programs, children's programmes which help encourage use and exposure of the language.

Its horses for courses, I think if you are happy with subtitles, then you can merrily watch it. If you don't then don't worry about it.

No one knows what will happen in the negotiations. But for commercial and funding reasons, the BBC does not want to loose £320 millions in license fee money.

BBC can't just disappear, there is freesat and as I already stated commercial funding reasons meaning the BBC just won't let 5 million viewers or listeners go.

I cannot see a Scottish Government being happy for a legal requirement to be maintained that its citizens who use a TV must pay a foreign organisation or face legal action. Presumably, therefore, either the Scottish Government will collect and pay the BBC or there would be some form of subscription.

I'm not sure how they would deal with the Freesat issue, though!

Old Boy, this is now, if there is a Yes vote then everything is up for negotiation.

All the BBC Alba staff are in Scotland and all the equipment. I think the name will change but not the remit.

Freesat: remove Scottish Postcodes. TBH I do believe this will all be ironed out. Let's not forget, the new broadcaster is expected to take over on January 1st 2017 at the end of the current charter. So arrangements can be put in place/negotiated.

Very good question. BBC Sport built temporary studios (at considerable expense) for the Games right next door to BBC Scotland's Pacific Quay HQ, which is brand new and hardly used!

For the referendum, they 'got' from London BBC £5 million more. This covered a special question time debate programmes (cheap) 5 trainee reporters (even cheaper), (that) Sarah Smith and James Naughtie. I suspect BBC News will bring its own staff up to 'translate' the issues for the other nations in the UK
