Slow Uploads to Youtube....

Does anyone know how long the average file uploaded to youtube takes? I know it can vary depending on time day, server issues etc... but lately my uploads are taking extremely long... Longer than they ever have before. For example a video of about 1GB took about 10 hours and another hour or so to process - I have tried uploading the same file during and outside the traffic management hours but the time taken seems to stay constant. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my internet connection or YouTube itself. I know there was a big issue with streaming videos a while back that went on for some time, thankfully VM seem to have resolved this. If it is an issue with Youtube itself are there any tips for getting quicker uploads, I have heard you can use proxy servers? How do you do this? Also someone recommends taking the (s) out of https:// url but when I do this it always defaults it back to the secure connection.

Re: Slow Uploads to Youtube....

The way I would look at it is like this. Asking how long an "average" video takes to upload is highly ambiguous because it doesn't tell anyone about the two main factors in determining the time; upload speed and file size. File size/upload speed = upload time.

In order to gauge whether things aren't running as they should I would look at it this way: I am assuming you are 100/6 which gives you a maximum upload speed of 750k/sec so if everything was running perfectly a 1gb file would take 22 mins to upload. If it is taking 10 hours then it is taking 29 times longer than it would in perfect conditions.

I would agree that 10 hours sucks vs the 22 mins it could potentially be done in but the way to look at it is like this: I am sure there are tens of thousands of people uploading videos at any one time and although youtube will have multiple gigabit connections they are probably very very busy all the time. On top of that, if the server is taking 1 hour to process a 1gb file then that says something about the load on the server as well.

If you want to narrow it down to a) to VM's connection to youtube b) the youtube bandwidth c) the server load (i.e. a problem specific to youtube and not effecting anything else you are going to do), I would run a couple of speed tests the next time you want to upload something and see what upload speed you get to VM's internal test servers and then to one of the servers outside VM's network.

If you are looking to do large file uploads or multiple uploads, I would try and schedule them just before you go to bed and let them run over night if you can queue them. VM are very tight on their upstream bandwidth which is why your connection isn't 10:1 and with all the stuff going on in the evening and weekends I imagine there isn't a lot of free juice on the network. If your speed tests come back saying 6mbits but you are still only uploading to youtube at 29k/sec (which is what it works out at) then something is wrong.

Re: Slow Uploads to Youtube....

Thanks for your reply GM Well I have done a test prior to uploading a 350MB file and this is what I am getting.. This current upload is showing 100 minutes to finish which isn't that bad I suppose. I'm using Youtube's recommended upload settings which are High Quality. There is no use in converting to FLV before hand is there. Will that speed up the uploads or the processing time?

I was under the impression that all video was re-encoded for playback as flv which would account for the lengthy processing time if you uploaded it in a non-flv format. That being said, I have just done a quick google and that doesn't appear to be the case. Many peeps have made similar comments to you and it appears that the average upload rate is 5mins per mb which is awfully slow because that means my connection would be running at one seventh of its potential. Processing also takes a while depending on the length of the video and also varies depending on the current server load. Although your symptoms are indicative of a problem, it sounds like it is the norm and how youtube performs on average so I wouldn't worry about it. I can imagine how frustrating it is though knowing that something is taking so long to upload when it could be done in a fraction of the time.

not if he is on 100mbits which is the prefix of the thread, it should be 100/6 so he is getting just less than half his upload speed which is understandable for a Saturday evening.

Re: Slow Uploads to Youtube....

Looks like either congestion or there is something else on your network (As in your home network) doing some uploading. Disconnect everything except one device and try running the speed test again, then figure out what (if anything) is causing you to lose so much upload capacity.
