Economics. The cost of broadcasting on satellite or cable are fixed regardless of the number of viewers. LGI has far fewer potential MUTV subscribers than Sky. I calculate LGI to have a potential 840,000 and Sky 7m.
Here's the calculations:
Sky UK & Ireland has 10.6m TV customers.
VM UK has 3.8m and UPC Ireland fewer than 400,000 TV customers but let's generously call the total LGI customers 4.2m.
So already, Sky has 2.5 times more customers than LGI.
However, Sky's customers are overwhelmingly sports fans - two-thirds take Sky Sports (7m) whilst only 20% of LGI's (840,000) take Sky Sports. These people are far more likely to subscribe to MUTV than non-Sky Sports subscribers.

MUTV will have to pay for the extra capacity and an additional EPG fee for the HD slot on satellite. Perhaps Sky have helped with the start up costs and in return want an exclusivity period??

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3
Sky were originally stakeholders in the channel (owning a third, alongside ITV and the club) and , despite having been bought out by MUFC, I should imagine the relationship is still good.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3
I don't agree until at least Sunday Manchester United via their website and their tv channel was advertising the HD channel as being available on VM, something changed and if we are waiting for VM to release a statement about it we will still be waiting this time next test. Also for a company that has a big presence in Ireland like liberty global they should know that a disproportionate amount of people subscribe to mutv compared to say Chelsea tv.
And to think I was nearly back at VM for my tv, their system and they run their company means that you are always going to get sloppy seconds.

If we assume that a generous one in ten Sky Sports subscribers will also subscribe to MUTV then we get to the above figures.

I guess it all depends on "big presence".
If we take there to be 388,000 UPC Ireland subscribers of which 20% have Sky Sports, that gives us a figure of 77,600. If we assume that one in ten of these will subscribe to MUTV we get a figure of 7,760 subscribers. How much would you pay UPC Ireland for the privilege of broadcasting in HD if you were MUTV?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3
MB, do you know anything of a new TIVO update due soon?
I've just seen this and thought I'd share with you guys as I'm not sure if/when it will come to VM
http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/10/t...=rss_truncated
TiVo's Summer 2014 update makes it even easier to find something to watch
"Despite arriving nearly a year after the TiVo Roamio launched, this update looks to be one worth waiting for. To address the age old problem of choosing what to watch, TiVo has two new features that make that much easier...."
I didnt want to copy too much, so I've put the link in too.

You're not wrong, Vince. Virgin Media will let us have updates as it thinks appropriate! I think it might be a while before we see this one, but it would be nice. Hopefully some of the gliches that were thrown up with the last update will be resolved as well.

I really like the Tivo and all the functions that are on it, but since the last update, My Suggestions have been really strange. I don't bother with them anymore now really. That would be one thing I would like them to sort out.

I agree. VM were attempting to respond to those who were complaining about Suggestions, but they should have been ignored because all the complainants had to do was either ignore the folder or switch it off.
So when the new update is launched, I hope it will revert the Suggestions back to what they were, and also amend the glitch that throws your EPG back to the current page when you try to modify a series link a day or more in the future. This is really annoying and wastes so much time when you are making a number of entries.
I particularly like the ability to categorise your recordings on the American update. This makes trying to find the recording you are looking for much easier.
