Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

Ah. Well, strictly speaking 65 and 72.2 are the same MCS mode, one has a short GI and the other a (standard) long GI. 65 is really the standard minimum though, as the short-GI mode required for 72.2 is "optional".

[pedantic]P.S. I assume you mean Mbps, as MBps is also wrong [/pedantic]

Wireless-N does have a ridiculous combination of transmission modes though, which make it a wonder that Minstrel-based rate-control methods work at all. There's a total of 32 different Modulation and Coding Schemes each of which can be used in either 20 or 40Mhz mode both of whom can be used with short or long GI, plus an optional "extreme long range" MCS that can only be used in 40Mhz but either GI option for 130 different options in total.

Anyway, I digress. 72 (or 65, without the optional short-GI feature) is indeed the minimum most phones, tablets, and laptop cards are at least capable of, though the majority of laptop units are usually 2x1 (72 send, 144 receive) at a minimum.

Yeah, it's no wonder the whole Wireless-N thing is confusing to regular people. It's no wonder people get upset when their internet connection is only hitting 30Mbps on their cheapo off-brand Android tablet - it must be the connection at fault, because I'm using Wireless-N!

Yes, it's always the ISP's fault when you don't get the headline speed. Of course, it rarely is.

Hah, indeed. Though higher end devices even without MIMO support 40Mhz or even 80Mhz (AC) modes giving up to 150 or 433Mbps respectively.

I think that's one situation where AC may make a difference too - as it is by definition 5Ghz only and mandates supporting a minimum of 80Mhz on all devices (though actually using 80Mhz at all times is not a requirement), such that you essentially get a minimum speed of at least 325Mbps that should be supported by all devices.

Though compared to the maximum speeds of 1.2-2.4Gbps on high-end devices it's not really any less confusing than N. It's just the minimum will be a lot higher. And you don't have 2.4Ghz to contend with.

Since I've had the superhub I've had the wifi disconn and a cable from the superhub connected to my router, a Buffalo Nfiniti, and this provides the wifi.
It was just easier to leave the Nfiniti as the router. Also got a couple of wifi usb sticks, both wireless n, one a Buffalo and one a linksys connected to desk tops. Also got 2 nexus 7 tablets.

As I've now upgraded to 100MB, at a cost, when the schedule upgrades come round, in my area that's now 2015, will I be upgraded to something higher than 100MB for free?

It was the same with the last upgrade and the android TV anywhere app. If you are a new customer or threaten to leave then it's a different story. Its also being used as a lever to get punters to sign up to new contracts to get their 'free' upgrade.

Maybe it makes commercial sense to operate this way, but if you seriously hack off loyal customers it doesn't. How can a date change 4 times ? Once or even twice I could accept. Better to give no date if its really that difficult -there's been no major earthquakes/natural disasters affecting the cable network that I'm aware of.....

What's the betting the title of this thread has to change to "Coming 2015 (possibly)" ?

They release dates for said upgrades ect and unfortunately there are various reason why the dates get moved, this can be down to lack of equipment from suppliers, new fibre cable being needed, Air conn problems in buildings, power problems in buildings, holidays and countless other reasons why. This is no conspiracy.

This is incorrect?

The new tiers are 50, 100 and 152. If you're already on one of those tiers, there is nothing to upgrade to (unless Virgin rolls out another upgrade scheme - however nothing has been announced!).

So if you're on 100 now, you've got the "upgrade", you won't be getting anything more come 2015 unless there's an announcement.

If yes is the answer to "will I be upgraded to something higher than 100Mb for free?" then it is the wrong answer.

The 100Mb service is an already supercharged level and will get no further free upgrade under the current program.

The current levels are 30/60/120 and the supercharged levels are 50/100/152.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

Was on 120mb due to upgrade august-october 2014 and decided to ring up and see if they could change it now. They swapped my broadband to 152mb instantly. Getting through to Glasgow sure does help!

Can't get above this on upload though:
