Should you hear the fan going round?

i have been sleeping in living room due to cat having kittens under our bed and during the night i can hear the fan going or trying to go round.

so should you be able to hear it as it sounds like its finding it hard to go round.

is it worth getting VM out to look at it?

I don't here my Tivo box tbh just make sure it has enough room to breath etc. If it continues to be loud give VM a ring.

What you hear is not a fan, TiVo doesn't have one. Maybe it's the HDD spinning into life? Since the update standby on TiVo shuts down the hard drive unless a recording is being made. If you hear a noise from your TiVo in standby (and it's not recording) maybe you do need to call CS's. The V+ on the other hand is a noisy bugger most of the time and it's normal!

When TiVo is not in standby it buffers all 3 tuners continuously (using the HDD), it is not recommended to switch it off so often (reboot it once or twice a month). Try putting it in standby give it a minute to stop its processing and it should then be silent. Fortunately / unfortunately TiVo now connects to the network every six hours and I'm unsure if the HDD kicks into action when this is done (my thoughts are that it doesn't use the HDD to download or process this data).

I've just tested mine and it took 3 mins 25 secs to stop processing, wind down the HDD and go silent. Sleep well!

It does use the HDD for this, and also periodically for various other housekeeping purposes. Also the hard drives may spin themselves up periodically for their own reasons.

You may find it's better to leave the box on (also make sure power-saving is disabled) so the HDD spins all the time instead of it stopping and starting.

Re: Should you hear the fan going round?

You must have the SLEEP mode selected in the devices/power saving menu for the standby mode to have any real effect, then when your Tivo is not recording anything you've scheduled it will go completely silent almost like it was turned off, but it will wake itself if a new recording is scheduled.
