Yes, you are right, you cannot do this. It would be an extremely useful feature though.

I would like to bunch my recordings into those for me, those for my wife, those for both of us and those for the kids.

I hope that this feature can be added in a future update.

Yes that kind of thing. It would help organise the one-off recordings and if possible, group folders together for series links and wish list recordings. Is there a TiVo suggestions forum anywhere?

After creating your wishlist, select it and then select 'Modify recording options', one of the options is 'Get only in HD', change this to yes and job done.

It's a more logical place to put this option than in categories where it was before.

You can create numerous folders, Nialli's unofficial blog gives you the basics :

Only things recorded after creating the Wishlist will populate the folder, films that are recorded on another Wishlist will be seen in both folders. The folders can be narrowed i.e if you want a folder of just war films then category-films-war (for films there are over 25 sub categories). The more generic the folder the more it picks up. Nialli has published the basics needed but you really can sculpt a TiVo into something personal...

Yes, that's about as close as you can get, but this is not what we need. What would be useful is if you could select your recordings and have them put into the folder of your choice, (and with a title of your choice, such as 'Sabrina's shows') either in retrospect or as you record them.

The Wishlist method is too clumsy and does not really do the job.

Yep, totally agree. In an ideal world my stb would have the processing power of what is basically in today's terms, a low spec' PC.

However we've got what we got and it has developed a bit (not much) since what I received three years ago but sadly its core "award winning" software is over 20 years old and proving extremely hard to adapt to today's idea of a slick UI (look what they could manage with simple reminders!)

Nevertheless I do love my TiVo and if I have to live with slightly clumsy and slightly clunky brains, as opposed to lightning stupidity. I'm happy!

That has nothing to do with how old the code is - that was purely down to making sure a tuner was free so you could watch the programme you had a reminder set for, whilst at the same time doing it in a way that was cost effective.

Surely the real reason it was problematic to include reminders (in the way people wanted them) was because the people who designed Tivo were designing a PVR and Reminders have no place in a true PVR world. People were asking for functionality that was alien and pointless to the initial concept. So not surprising they were difficult to implement in a cost effective manor.

I agree wholeheartedly, PB, and I still don't understand why people wanted a reminder when they could simply programme it to record.

Old habits die hard, I suppose.

Whilst I'm not an expert but the age of the code in my opinion (and it is an opinion) has a huge involvement. An example would be the relatively young code of the TV guide. It provides a rapid, fluid UI experience when switching from the TV picture and back but when it gets involved with historic code (like my shows) the fluid UI and screen changes disappear.

Then the weak argument that TiVo needed to ensure that a tuner was free to set a reminder, what about just telling me that a reminder could not be set because 3 turners are in use and if I set a recording over a reminder it could tell me that too. (there may well be other reasons for the way reminders have been implement but the free tuner argument doesn't hold enormous stock as two tuner machines that record on both still have reminders that don't force a recording).

But I do agree that cost has huge bearing on what gets written and that it seems TiVo Inc. keeps all coding in house. Spreading themselves into over eight countries with very different cable companies and needs (I guess) making Virgin's programming time shorter than what's ideally needed.

As I said, the way the reminders are done was a compromise between achieving reminders for those what wanted them vs not spending too much money on a complicated solution that departed too far off the core TiVo code, none of which was designed with reminders as part of the plan. I don't have an issue with this.

The arguments over whether it could have been differently have been done to death when Reminders were introduced, and don't see any reason to go over them again.
