Exclamation Ipad Codecs

Hi Peeps,

This is baffling me, I hope someone can help me out here.

Basically, I have a Galaxy Tab, and my Ex has an iPad 3.

I have set up a NAS server for movies so she can watch them and so can I, for some reason I can watch what i want, no matter what codec, Xvid, Mp4, Avi etc etc. But when she tries to watch it, she cant, unless its Mp4.

I used to have an issue with my galaxy tab so i downloaded a different player which i set as my default player, similar to what you can do in Windows. But her Ipad wont let you do this. Its called MX player.

It seems as though she is stuck with the default player on the Ipad and can never watch AVI or Xvid?

Forgive me if i sound stupid, but can this be changed? Considering the majority of movies nowadays are mp4 i understand that they might not support xvid or avi but its still a widely recognized format. There must be a way to change the default player to something i use like MX player?

Re: Ipad Codecs

Why would you still want to allow your ex access to your NAS? lol.

As Tiz says install VLC on the iPad.

Re: Ipad Codecs

You can't change the default player (which only plays MP4), but you can install a variety of 3rd party video players that can play locally stored videos or stream videos that use other codecs.

I use AVPlayerHD to play videos stored on the iPad and AirPlayer to play videos stored elsewhere that I stream via DLNA. Both support Xvid, Divx, MKV, etc.

As mentioned, there's also VLC.

Re: Ipad Codecs

Ive installed VLC player on her ipad and the other one mentioned.

Ive accessed my book live app and clicked in an xvid movie and it just comes up with a question mark the same as it always does. It only does it on the ipad, regardless of any 3rd party software that I install.

Re: Ipad Codecs

You need to use the 3rd party players to actually play the videos. They are not there to provide codec support for other apps.

Re: Ipad Codecs

Not on an iPad

As Matt says, you need to use an app that can handle the file type to open the file. You can't load codecs, plugins and the like onto an iPad in the same way as you do on an open system like Windows or OSX. You just load apps that do specific things. Even then, you often can't change the default app that is used for a particular task.

Re: Ipad Codecs

I hear what youre saying but im not sure how to do it. Have any of you used Mybook Live? Its an app that connects to my NAS. When I open that I can browse my folders and select the movie. It automatically chooses the ipads video player. It wont let me choose another player in the settings.

also in the other players mentioned, theres no way I can choose the video because I would have to go through mybook app. If that makes sense.

Re: Ipad Codecs

You don't have to use the mybook app to connect to the NAS. You should be able to access it using a weblink or an ip address.

Could you install TwonkyMediaServer or some other DLNA media server on the NAS?
