Just what we need, another TV and movie on demand service

Netflix, Lovefilm, Blinkbox, NOW TV etc.... Great for choice but I'm sure in the long term only one will survive. My money is on Netflix to out muscle the rest.

It's play.com's answer to Netflix/Lovefilm.

There is an extra part to it though in that you they also have PPV alongside the subscription service.

When they launched, they had an introductary price of £3/pm for as long as you subscribed. But for my taste (mainly TV shows) the subscription titles weren't that good and hardly anything was added. I have no interest in PPV. Video quality was SD and often froze and audio was stereo. I gave it two mobths to see if it improoved and as it didn't, I quit the service.

Anyone got their eye in the stream count today. Something changed last night, as my box started on a different channel to the one I left it on last night, which is usually a sign that something's been added/removed.

To me, that's a bit like saying we only need one entertainment channel and Sky 1 will muscle out the rest! At the moment there are two distinct types of service: all-you-can-eat mainly older content (Netflix, Now TV) and pay-per-view (Virgin Movies, BlinkBox).

There's so much more variation possible in content and so much content not yet available online that I can only see more of these services coming. Cineworld could incorporate a service into its monthly all-you-can-see film pass, there could be a Bollywood-only Netflix and an arthouse-only Now TV.

Personally l think there is space in the market for quite a few Chad to survive and prosper.

I think this is the way tv is heading tbh i wouldn't be surprised if say 15 years time we have no live channels at all and everything is on demand.

Live channels will never disappear in my humble opinion.

How many live channel contents are actually "live", look at ITV schedule for e.g

these are the following "live shows"

6am daybreak
8.30 Lorraine
10.30 This Morning
13.30 News
6pm News
10pm news

7 hours out of 24 are live of which alot of it is News!, i think we are already there

But there's a difference between 'live' channels and 'linear' channels.

I think that it is only a matter of time before there is a sea change in viewer habits and video on demand becomes the choice of viewing for the majority over TV channels.

I think that VM need to look carefully at their on demand content and enhance it substantially to make it attractive, and the news that they are going to be concentrating on this means of providing content this year is welcome.

I cannot see the majority of the population continuing to waste their time watching all the tripe that interrupts TV programmes and that is inserted in between them, and to have their evening's viewing determined by the programme controllers.

In the longer term, I am convinced that we will have fewer linear channels and eventually these may even be reduced to the extent that only genuinely 'live' programmes, such as sport and news, are broadcast in this way.

Incidentally, even live programmes can be put on demand so you can view them as they happen, in the same way as you can with stuff that is recording on your Tivo. So you don't really need 'live' TV channels at all.

Ah, that explains it. Nothing to make a note of, just discussion over on demand and linear channels.

Have you got any news about February channel launches you'd like to share with us?
