The latter being a contended, shared service, and the former is not.

You're talking about as big a difference as a leased line vs. Virgin Media cable.

Source please?

It was on the BTWholesale briefing portal last year but the link I have no longer works. I'll see what I can find.

Most recent I could find was this:

Re: (Advice) Thinking of leaving Virgin Media 120mb for BT Infinity up to 76mb

A chap called Steven contacted me from Level 2 tech support at Virgin Media and I had a 45 minute chat with the guy. Very good and very understanding.

He informed me that my Service group at the head end has 962 customers connected to it on various different tiers. He said 600 would be a rule of thumb and that they should divide my group I am connected to in half.

Again I was informed that this work is due to start late summer and Cat C in September (Subject to change of course - most likely). I said I have already decided to leave to try BT Infinity since FTTC is now available and he understood that.

Anyway, just an update on my situation.

Hey guys who are using FTTC.

How far are you from the FTTC cabs?

Thanks,

Re: (Advice) Thinking of leaving Virgin Media 120mb for BT Infinity up to 76mb

Had Sky for over a year now and I would highly recommend it. Had one outage for a few days after some copper was stolen from an exchange in London but apart from that it has been rock solid and fault free. Pings/latency have been as good as the day it was installed and have always got top speed. No congestion problems at all, not even a hit of them.

Upgraded to 80/20 last month and get the full amount too.

Re: (Advice) Thinking of leaving Virgin Media 120mb for BT Infinity up to 76mb

I've had sky fttc 80/20 for over a year too. Apart from a local power outage I have had no downtime or congestion issues at all. Pings have always been excellent.

My only caveats are the sky hub which although pretty solid is extremely poorly featured and sky's use of a propriety version of MER which, to say the least, is unfriendly if you want to use a decent router of your choice.

Sky have now changed their T&C's to reflect the change that they no longer insist on you using the supplied sky hub but they are no help whatsoever when it comes to discovering your sky hub username/password.

A strange going on as I am sure it costs them subscribers.

Probably not as many as you'd think.

Care to elaborate?

I have no idea how many but I do know some have chosen BT or PlusNet because Sky's policy on Fibre BB.

Re: (Advice) Thinking of leaving Virgin Media 120mb for BT Infinity up to 76mb

My virgin media is stopped service 16th February (disconnected) due to price rise and I had the right to cancel it with no penalty fee due to price increase (my contract end August 2014). My FTTC is ready to order from 31st January 2014, so, two weeks of FTTC order I should be able to have FTTC 80/20 ready by middle of February.

Bye Bye Virgin Media

Re: (Advice) Thinking of leaving Virgin Media 120mb for BT Infinity up to 76mb

Is it too late for me to cancel it citing price increases only to move to FTTC? I received the letter just before Christmas (I think)

P.S. I'm still in a contract

Even during a local power outage my BT Infinity connection stayed up without a hitch.

Screw Sky!

I think Mick meant his equipment went off, as oppose to openreaches kit which is on a UPS
