I wonder what will happen then 4k tv comes in? Will HD then be the norm and 4k channels cost the additional amount...

That's probably a question for a decade away.

Not really. The like of YouTube, Netflix and Lovefilm are currently testing 4K with a view to launching it this year. TV will need to keep up, unless of course this fulfils the prophecies that we're moving away from live linear TV to on demand content.
Still don't see a TV below 50in benefiting from it though.

The likes of Netflix etc don't have the same limitations TV channels do. The current HD channels don't even broadcast in 1080p due to bandwidth limitations, I can't see 4k being any time soon.

Agreed , new hardware is also an issue for pay TV platforms as the current STB's aren't compatible with 4K.

Yes but that's more to do with broadcasters wishing to save on transponder space on satellite rather than any technical limitation. They decided that the STB was able to introduce the extra frame, so there was no need for them to broadcast it. Doubtless when 4K comes along they will do the same, broadcast at up to 2160i rather than p.
However I agree it'll be a while before we see it's widespread take-up Most people (like me) who want to early-adopt are still waiting for the full ratification of HDMI 2.0 before jumping in.
However I wouldn't be at all surprised if the first public broadcasts took place this year, perhaps in a similar way to the way that Sky launched 3D. They sell the TVs to pubs at a subsidised rate and show the World Cup or Commonwealth Games (someone might be interested) in them. Then they launch a separate 4K channel specialising in endless repeats of that.
Edit: OK, I exaggerated when I said someone might be interested in the Commonwealth Games. Sorry...

Just noticed a bit of false advertising... Can anyone spot the channel which isn't available in HD? http://my.virginmedia.com/customer-n...-standard.html

lol thanks! I just wish they'd hurry up and put the rest of the bloody missing Sky HD channels on. As my bills will be going up by £5.75 a month I'd expect to see more HD channels being added. I'll be happy then!

We're easily pleased! HD shouldn't cost extra and therefore should not be forcing any price increases. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if the price increases didn't come with any service improvements.
