EDF to raise prices by 3.9%

I see EDF are I say again are only rising their prices by 3.9% - I wonder if this might trigger a price war at last.

Somehow the chance of a price war in these coming years is about as likely as a man landing on Mars.

Re: EDF to raise prices by 3.9%

EDF have also said that if the Government don't move some of the green levies over to direct taxation then they will increase their energy prices to similar to what the others in the big six are.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24909251

However, EDF warned that if the government failed to reduce green levies, the firm might have to put up its prices further.

Re: EDF to raise prices by 3.9%

De-nationalisation and no teeth regulation has created a Cartel that can, and does, effectively hold the Country to ransom by threatening to turn the lights out.

The same can be said about the Water companies. The regulator is a little stronger but there is absolutely no competition.

It doesn't matter how much we moan these Companies will continue to squeeze our pips for years to come and short of sending in the Army to forcibly take them back, there is nothing we can do about it. We gave them the deck and they took the aces out.

It is perplexing why some think that re renationalisation is the answer all that would do is either drive taxes up or push the price of energy up

Re: EDF to raise prices by 3.9%

One of the reasons they were privatised was a desire by HMG to remove the huge cost of running these utilities from coming out of govt. coffers. Things were not better before - there was massive underinvestment, huge inefficiency and serious structural costs inevitably mounting up. Renationalising these utilities would not only cost a huge amount upfront but would simply pass the costs of what still needs to be done onto the taxpayer once again. Keeping prices artificially low would simply mean increased taxes.

So if it's not the taxpayer/man in the street whose forking out then who is. Keeping prices artificially high simply means being ripped off to keep fat cat CEO's and shareholders sweet.

If it weren't denationalised and El Gov was screwing it and us up then, at least, we have the option of voting them out. The way things are everybody is helpless as their is no effective competion - by design!!!!

I guess the bottom line is, who do you wanna be screwed over by. El Gov or the energy companies. The way things are we are getting screwed over by both.

Not that things have ever been any differnt or ever will

The power company are licensed thieves.

They make the the stuff and sell it to themselves, why is the government allowing them to do this, and I wonder how many MPs have interests on them.
