Yeah - you're off again
In fact nobody is on my list for the reasons I gave. Not that I expect you to give a flying **** anyway - at least I would hope not.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

line rental is BTs bread and butter, if naked dsl ever came, then the line rental fo rthat would likely be very similiar and if any difference exists it would be plumped onto the broadband rental.

The interesting bit is people say providers are all after call revenue, but I cant think of many people who heavily use landlines as its the mobile phone era, only businesses seem to use them heavily.

For the last year or two I have noticed that providers with their package deals try to get people on the basic free weekend calls only, possibly for the reason of making more money through phone calls. The packages are often stacked in such a way that most have only the basic option unless you go for the top combined packages. The mixture of free weekends, free evening and weekends and anytime calls has changed a lot the last couple of years.

Just an observation from looking at providers over the last 18 months.

yeah, i can't remember the exact details of the package buy I am sure we are on the top phone package for free evening and weekend calls and then we pay an extra £3 to make it free landline calls anytime

my view is thats now the min package for 2 reasons.

1 - it is an excuse for higher prices.
2 - most people arent making enough calls to make it good value (in other words its profitable).

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

A quick question for the technically minded guys out there, i am on the 100Mb at the moment, i didn't bother to take up the 120Mb option when it was offered as it meant having to get the new superhub, the reason i didn't bother was because there were all sorts of reports saying that the superhub was basically rubbish, can anyone tell me if the superhub has had a software update, and therefore all the teething problems that were there at the start have gone or not?

The 120mb package was not an option afaik if you are already on 100mb, it will be automatically pushed to your modem, but that should have been done by now, ring up and ask them to change your package to 120mb and it should just push automatically to your current modem

You shouldn't have to change the modem unless it is incapable of providing 120mb, if you are using the VMNG300, they are compatible.. I think

There's no issue of "compatability". It's about throughput and load-balancing.

The VMNG300 can do 4 downstream channels maximum, so theoretically 200Mb.
However some areas have been upgraded to 6 or 8 downstream channels to distribute the load better between the channels. In those areas, being stuck on 4 channels might only give 85 or 105Mb or whatever. You'd only know once you try.

In modem mode both Superhubs are good. Better than the VMNG300 as they have 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels to distribute the load better.

Wifi wise the Superhub1 is still poor (because that's a hardware antenna issue), the Superhub2 is ok.
If you're using your own wireless router you probably won't notice any difference, except for the increased speed.

At the time it wasn't proven to be wrong but now that VM have announced their strategy for 2014 and it doesn't appear to offer either 200 down or the massive network upgrades that 100 up would involve I think we can safely say it is wrong.

If enough random predictions get made then so long as they aren't beyond the feasible as that one is on upstream some are bound to eventually prove to be correct.

I've given up putting anybody on ignore as it is indeed pointless - especially with controversial posters who get quoted and talked about.
And besides it isn't anything to get really worked up about, at least not to the point of making someone feel uncomfortable.

I'm afraid I have been guilty of this, showing exasperation and inadvertently encouraging attacks on TC, but really we need to chill out and chuckle quietly inside.

If he's moving to 120Mb then he's unlikely to get full speed all the time on a VMNG300, unless his area is still only on 4 ds channels.

Anything else we can't really predict.

We've had this argument plenty of times before. Apparently channels can be swapped around as needed, so the UBR is capable of load-balancing them correctly. I don't necessarily buy that though, I don't see why Virgin would bother pushing out 6 or 8 DS channels in that case.

Simply put, the SH2 is a fine device and especially in modem mode, it's comparable to the Ambit 300 except with the extra channels. Anyone arguing otherwise is seriously splitting hairs.

in VM support mode during that post?

Not sure whats so complex about it.

A docsis will assign 4 DS channels to a connecting vmng300, unless there is a fault or restriction in config. If there is more than 4 DS channels the docsis can choose which 4 to assign, it doesnt have to be the same 4 every time, so as such a degree of load balancing can still occur with 4 DS modems on 8 DS channels. Indeed VM have operated like that for years prior to docsis 3 eg. using 1 US channel modems in service groups of 4 US channels.

A vmng300 modem wont automatically get less speed in 8 DS channel service groups, in fact its more likely to get higher speeds as there is more capacity available to all users.

The sh2 a fine device which completely obseletes the vmng300? never used a sh2 so cant speak on own experience but there is problems reported by sh2 users so I expect the statement is false.

And VMNG graphs still look far smoother than either SH1 or SH2 graphs
