Under existing Virgin Media rules, you've always been able to do that anyway for cable services.

Except the new ruling doesn't come into effect until early next year and only applies to new contracts.

So if you take the 150 meg option and sign a new contract, the price goes up by 6.7%? A "free" upgrade indeed.
Or will the price rise be wider than new contracts?

Virgin Media broadband customers will see bills rise by 6.7% from February.

That's the only thing that will make me start to think about downgrading or moving altogether.

Any price rise will happen whether you go for the new speed or not.

Nooo, I was talking about OFCOM's ruling that price rises mean you can exit your contract early. The price will go up regardless, but you've got little recourse.

Again, problem with your maths. In order to get 145Mb maximum on speed test you need to change the Max Traffic Rate to be 152Mb. Virgin don't announce max traffic rates, they announce tiers and as Kabaal quite rightly said add an overhead to skew the Ofcom results. So what I said, speed of 160Mb, should be correct if VM do what they announced.
Code:
Tier Max Traffic Rate Speed test
152Mb 168Mb 160Mb

The last price rise (£1.50 for BB only customers) resulted in a price reduction for those that phoned in to complain. Mine went from £26.75 with an impending £1.50 increase down to £22.50 for 60Mbps.
On that basis and the fact I never get that 60Mbps according to the SamKnows box my target price when notified of the change will be £20.

Standalone broadband customers won't get another price increase in Feb - as you've already had yours.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
Talking about speedtests..
I think config for 152 will look like this:
152Mb
Downlaod: 160000000 bps - ~152.58Mbps (Speed Test)
Upload: 12000000 bps - ~11.44Mbps (Speed Test)
No increase for stand alone broadband package? Is that 100%?
Then it's a good news for me. I removed phone service from package and signed up for 12 months for standalone broadband just 5 days after price increase in October. So might work out ok for me.
In any case you can almost always phone up and negotiate your price.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
Currently on the Premiere package which has 60Mb internet. Checked what speed increase i'll be getting and got this
Quote:
Even faster broadband - coming soon
Right now you have our up to 10Mb broadband. That's really fast, but between March and May 2014 you'll be able to upgrade to super speedy up to 10Mb broadband at no extra monthly cost. We'll email you when it's ready.
Your speed will increase from Broadband 10Mb to Broadband 10Mb
|
I'm currently on a loyalty discount that runs out in April next year so i'll be phoning up anyway to see what I can get. But |I dod find it strange that it still says that i'm on 10Mb.

Ooops, wonder why it's done that. But I'd expect the date estimate to be correct

That would be a departure from the over-provisioning they do on all the tiers so far and would gain them nothing. They would lose on marketing because some areas Ofcom results are deflated due to congestion and won't achieve that speed. I can't see them shooting themselves in the foot like that as they actually care about how they are allowed to market their product.
