Remembrance Sunday

Quote:
The UK fell silent in tribute to service personnel who have died during conflicts, as part of the annual Remembrance Sunday service.

A two-minute silence was observed, before the Queen laid the first wreath at the Cenotaph in central London.

The monarch joined more than 10,000 veterans plus political, Commonwealth and religious leaders at the ceremony.

Services have taken place at memorials across the UK, in Commonwealth countries and at military bases abroad.

Saw lots of the old veterans out and about this weekend as usual mixed with what seemed like a lot more young people in uniforms than normal. As one decorated old guy said thank you for our donation I could only say "No. Thank you!"

So glad the sun's out today as we remember all the sacrifice - we're off to our local war memorial now to spend a few moments reflecting.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

Went to ours..the local branch of the Legion is dwindling.Sadly without a clubhouse I think there is a real chance that it could finish for good as the other local branches still have a clubhouse.

However the turn out was good considering we have two war memorials on Lee sea front and two services going at the same time.Lots of younger ex servicemen attending as well.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

Stood in the park and thought that the people out for a stroll and the dog walkers were going to just carry on but as soon as Radio 4 started to broadcast the bongs from the Westminster Palace clock tower after the gun they all stopped and fell silent bar one.

This country should be proud of itself for this ceremony.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

Wigan footballer James McClean was today sent home by the club for refusing to wear the poppy. I'm not sure why and what his reasons given were, we should soon know though.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

This is the free country my father fought for. That means people are free not to wear a poppy and to not observe a two minute silence..

Otherwise to start behaving towards such people in draconian ways is to cheapen the sacrifice that those soldiers that have gone to defend this country's freedoms and died for it.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

James McClean is Irish and doesn't wear one. He didn't last year either. People don't have to wear a Poppy.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

Yeah I don't wear Poppys that much for the same reason. They tend to fall off or get damaged and you need to keep replacing them. I got a metal pin but that fell off too!

Well each time one falls off you can feel comforted by the thought that buying another to replace it is a very worthwhile cause.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

I watched the programme remembrance from the Albert Hall last night and thought it was excellent and brought tears streaming down my face. Today was very moving watching all these proud people marching for our country. It was wonderful.

How people want to break up the UK should be ashamed of them self. WE all need each other in my opinion.

Re: Remembrance Sunday

You know what guys, and i think most of you are from England, but there was a few teams in Scotland who did NOT hold a mins silence in respect of the fallen heroes, i'll give you one guess to which team was involved!
