Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.
If the tivo launches are still just tests does this mean the software being released is BETA and by the time it rolls out completely there will be a new main versio of software??Doesnt make sense for tests to be done like this otherwise. new tivo software released down south two weeks ago. it works. no complaints. so then they still stagger out the launch as a test? if it works in an entire area of the Uk surely it'll work everywhere???
its not as if the software which works in east anglia is different to what was released in teeside last night? it worked in east anglia so why not release it everywhere at once.

You've obviously never been involved in beta testing have you ? How do you know that there haven't been any bugs/issues raised just because some on here say they have no issues doesn't mean there aren't any. Roll outs are always staggered with any software to see if anymore issues surface before releasing to all boxes.

I have with many versions of Microsofts operating system. It was released as a beta. Never did they release betas in staggered geographical phases. I've known different versions of betas being released after bugs have been detected. Never the same version of software being released over several weeks.
They should have released in one location. Let them test over 6 weeks. Release to everyone once it's been tested in that area.

Sky do the exact same , I've had software at beta its then been released to the general public boxes however its always staggered to see if any further issues surface and keep an eye on the general feedback. Its usually spread over 4-8 weeks sometimes more.

l have to say Vince that l agree with MM on this one as unforeseen problems can occur at any time and its better to sort them out before rollouts go nationwide.

There wouldn't have been an update tonight anyway. Fridays aren't a good day to do updates - we don't want customers left without TV over the weekend if it all goes horribly wrong.

What makes you think everyone has had the same version?

The VM network was built by many different companies who all used their own standards. So the technology varies between the regions. Testing in only one region wouldn't guarantee it would work elsewhere.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.
Stress testing anyone? Staged, unannounced test areas, with increasing controlled usage is a very sensible approach. Avoids catastrophic network overload......guess what I do for a living! ;-)
Virgin don't announce a launch, that way they can't be slagged for missing a date or poor performance. They haven't anything to be judged against.
That being said.....GIMME NETFLIX!!!
;-)

I agree with all this
But as a company which now owns the entire network surely they shouldn't do this in future and should understand their network?

They do understand their network, which is why it's tested in different regions - because they know there are technical differences
