Either we have different aims for running or we'll agree to disagree - but the inaccuracies from a GPS phone are far from acceptable for someone wanting to consistently better with their stats.
...and that's where we'll agree to disagree.

I suspect I could improve my stats using a watch, never mind gps tracking.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

I came across this on my travels..

http://tribesports.com/challenges/30...-sec-to-5-mins

It's about using 'planking' to strengthen the muscles that runners use but often fail to train properly. It's not just for runners though, planking helps with your general posture anyway especially for those with lower back problems.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

That's really good, I'd been doing a sort of plank (basically a held in the upright position of a press up) but this is much much better, you really feel it much sooner.

Nicest of all, you're not sat there endlessly doing 200 sit ups like I was, when you get the same (or possibly better effect) by doing a plank for 1 min x 3 times every 2 days!

Just noticed that, one thing you'd do is just use the same device, if it's inaccurate, at least it's consistently inaccurate, and the timings will be relative for improvement, if you're using 6 different devices, then you'll get variation - just use the one device.

That doesn't make any sense! If it's inaccurate you won't know your improvements. If it's consistently inaccurate (as phones are by the way they use GPS) then it's even worse. It could give a false improvement time when in fact you've unknowingly had your worst session.

It's like saying you'd be happy to use a car with a faulty speedometer to see what its best 0-60 times are.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

You're missing my point, if you use the same device, and it's consistently inaccurate, It's like a clock running 1 minute slow, you know it's running 1 minute slow, and it always runs one minute slow. So you can allow for it.
I'm unconvinced that a GPS unit is so inaccurate (on the same device) that one time it's 0.2km short, then the next day 0.2km long

It's never inaccurate to the same amount. Phones take a periodic 'snapshot' which by its nature will never be the same twice.

I went out on a 3.2 mile (approx 5k) run last night as per my Garmin. The Nike+ app on my phone recorded it at 3.5 miles. If I was using that to get a good time on a 5k it would be useless.

Fine for those with regular access to a track.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Am I the only 'girl' here that has a weight problem? For my ha'pence worth, Mr Tink has been unwell for the past 10 days, and it has made me think more about my own personal health and what I can do to improve it. I wish I had Tizme's will power. However since last Wednesday I have been watching what I am eating, low fat etc and cutting out all the unnecessary nibbles. I think I have lost in the region of 4lbs, so it's a start, hope I can keep it up.

that is a great start it soon adds up. I think of food now as nutrition not as a pleasure I get my pleasure out of something else. So maybe find a hobby or something new that gives you a buzz

As long as you only eat when you're hungry, and stop eating as soon as your body tells you you're full, you will lose weight even if what you eat isn't low calorie etc. It's what I did to lose 2 and a half stone in 5 months last year. The running helped of course but considering you need to expend around 3500 calories to burn off 1lb of fat, it didn't play a big part.

You can feel hungry when really you are thirsty.
Also the larger you your basal rate is higher meaning your body is burning more at rest than someone at ideal weight

My tip is eat little and often and have one big mean a day that makes you full. If you use a lot of veg or salad to do this

If you are used to eating a lot your stomach will be stretched so you will not feel full when you have had enough so you need to be your own guide

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

If you eat when you're not actually hungry, your body will store it whether it's a salad or pie and chips.

not true.

Your body is burning energy all day long. You feel hungry when your stomach is empty not when your body is in need of energy.

All food is processed by the body and to be used as energy it gets refined down to a molecular level. It does not happen in the stomach all this does is breaks the food down ready for passage through the intestine. This is where the goodness from food is absorbed

I did nutrition along with Anatomy and Physiology at collage some years back. Very interesting subjects

Have a read up on glycogen ATPs and ADPs and Krebs cycle

It is.

Read Paul McKenna's I Can Make You Thin where he explains the whole process simply. It's exactly what worked for me and everyone else I know who I recommended it to.

If you ate 10 plates of salad at each meal time whether you were hungry or not, you would put on fat.

absolute garbage. now if you ate 10 plates of salad a couple of kebabs and a chinese you would

Here is a prime example of someone who would rather believe a hack than someone who actually knows the facts
