You make some very good points.

VM make very little, if anything, from the Sky movie channels, so have little to lose if customers ditch Sky movies in favour of Netflix.

In fact, it may be beneficial to VM if customers do swap over as they may make a small commission on Netflix sales

Sky have the new releases, so it's bound to cost more than Netflix. I don't see how Netflix could have the same number of new releases that Sky does without raising the price.

ATM you have distinct options. More newer movies from Sky at a higher cost or older movies and loads of TV from Netflix at a rock bottom price.

A good compromise, as has been pointed out, is bluerays/DVDs from Lovefilm at £10/month, which also includes the streaming content as well.

You pays your money etc.

You do indeed and I will try Netflix as advised and see what it is like. Then will probably stick to Sky Movies!! But will give it a chance....

Anyone thinking that Netflix will win major 1st window subscription movie rights AND continue charging £6 per month, are in for disappointment.

Those rights aren't cheap. That's why the Sky Movies option on Now TV is over double what Netflix charge now.

I too doubt they will win many major first window subscriptions, for £6 a month. Just like SS are very unlikely to lose the best 1st pick premier league games whilst BT sport is only £12-£15. Sky will hold the upper hand for a long time still.

It would be nice, however, for a company to take them on and give customers more choice and better value. Any films I missed at the cinema and am desperate see as soon as they come out, I will simply continue to rent them from Blockbuster, where I believe they still come out before Sky get them (am happy to be corrected on that though.)

You can't compare Lovefilm's £10p/m charge with Netflix's £6 as they are for different things.

The only true comparison is between both of their streaming services, which are the same price at £6p/m.

I think at one time Lovefilm had optional titles that you could pay extra for to stream, but not sure if they do now?

No way was I trying to belittle you. I merely said that as an XL user myself, the cost of adding sports and movies is prohibitive for me, and I suspect some (but not all) users here.

If you watch a lot of sports and/or movies, then is is probably good for you, but as I rarely watch either, I cannot justify the expense

Yes you can keep films whilst subscribed to Sky Movies and they vanish with your subscription. Does anyone else think Netflix will be like this or On Demand only...?

Netflix is streaming only. And will be via TiVo app only.

I don't watch sports but for me, Sky movies is too expensive at £26.50 p/m with HD, which you have to have to get 5.1 audio.

Most of the films are endlessly repeated and although you do get to see films first on Sky movies, that's a heck of a premium for the few recent releases that you may want to watch.

I've had Sky movies via Now TV for about 5 months now, at £2.50 p/m on a special 6 month offer. The plan was to watch any new premiers that interest me that aren't available on Netflix. I've probably only watched on average one a month. So that will definitely get cancelled at the end of the 6 month offer.

Netflix aren't just some small company though, they have 30 million subscribers in the US alone. Heck Google wanted to buy them last year for 18 billion

True - and the reason why Netflix is so successful is because they offer a lot for a cheap price (even more if you use proxy services).

Going after Sky means spending more on content, and the cost of that will at some point be passed onto us customers. How big would Netflix be if they charged £12 per month for some 1st-window movie rights? At that price, the likes of Now TV become realistic options.
