The problem is, unless you know the exact name if what you're looking for, even the search function isn't helpful. Calculator is pretty easy, but there's a lot more than that in the windows OS.

The thing is, while a decent search tool can be handy (not that I am implying that Windows 8 has a decent search tool, as it doesn't), if users are having to search for basic things like a calculator, what really is the point of having a resource-hungry gui?

Windows key > show all apps > click calculator.

In 8.1 at least, not that I have any intention of moving from 7 again.

Most windows users will use only a fraction of what the pc can do.
There is more than one search method in 8 have no problem with any of them and if you do not know the name why would you want to use it?
resource hungry gui? funny win 8 is the lightest out the box since XP

Shame it does not act or feel anything like that.

If you had a room of say 100 non windows 8 users and asked them to do a variety of tasks with windows 8 that they can presently do now with windows 7, how many would you say would be able to do it as quickly as they do now and how many would say WTF, why does it look like a mobile phone or pad interface ????.

Microsoft decided to force a whole new way of working on there users and never at one time prior to it did it strike them that people might be a bit ****ed off about it

I will make a bold claim here, Windows 8 will pass both Vista and Millennium as the most hated and despised Microsoft operating system and that will be pushed into releasing there next major OS early to try to recover some ground.

with a little patience ( something I know you will admit you lack) windows 8 is a very easy to use OS.

If you put 100 average windows users in a room with 100 windows 8 pcs I configured hardly any of them will know the difference. They might say oh there is a ribbon on explorer that's new or oh look some extra trendy apps and a fancy screen I can use when I want. What they will say is oh my that booted up quick, oh wow this is fast and snappy, oh it shuts down quick, The few business workers who sign into VPN will find it easier than ever. I could go on all day. Ive also spoken to loads of people who actually like the new UI and are not afraid of change

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

windows 8 might work nicely on a touch screen tablet device, but on a desktop, it's not so friendly in terms of an interface.

microsoft's mistake is thinking they can make a one-size-fits-all OS. if we take into account the number of businesses out there that are MS domains, having to retrain the staff on how to use the OS is going to be painful for the admins. especially as a large number of users already have serious PC illiteracy issues. windows 8 only goes into compounding the fact they will essentially need to relearn a new way of doing things.

please don't bring back the old attitude that everything is a personal attack on your windows desktop knowledge. the sarcastic, passive-aggressive comments were not welcome under the old name, let's not associate them with the new one, smiley or no smiley.

think of it as friendly comment on an observation. you can take it as advice if you like, or you can ignore it and potentially end up in the same position as last time. personally, I don't care. It was a comment for your benefit, not mine. this is the last I will say of it as it's now off topic.

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

Just as long as Microsoft don't try to put the start menu back. I much prefer it the way it is. I guess in windows 9 they could have it with metro or not as an option in the installer.

I may well be in a minority but what with Hazel and finally a decent magnifier I find it much more usable than any windows that came before.

But then I also rarely use a mouse unless I'm (trying) to play a game. I rely on keystropkes.

that really is all that is needed. I for one don't mind W8, but I'm an experienced Windows user. all the same, I don't like the way W8 flicks between the metro interface and the 'old' style desktop. just keep it on the desktop imo. metro for a tablet, sure. not so much for desktop machines.

I do not get in trouble because of my arrogance when it comes to tech. In fact its the tech support I have offered the forum that has extended me the grace period I now enjoy. What gets me into trouble is I take no crap and speak my mind that is not going to change. The same result for this name is inevitable due to those reasons

as I said it takes just one minute to change all that. And it could be slipstreamed for mass deployment if needed

It is easy - but I suspect it's even beyond a lot of people. I can only think of a handful of people I /personally/ know around here that could manage it. Of course I could do it FOR then but an option on install would be so much easier.

I still think that sometimes it would just be easier if there was a computer license

just remember, you're not the only one here who can offer advice on computing. there are a number of very useful and friendly posters here who offer more than desktop pc advice. you are by no means an authoritative figure. imo, just lose the attitude and the anger. you're no special more special than anyone else here.
