The only way to do this is against the Ts&Cs of the Virgin Media contract as it requires a non-Virgin Media-supplied box to be connected to the cable feed.

To be fair BT do acknowledge that the figure includes those who get the service for free.

Must admit I'm impressed. It was just a few weeks ago they confirmed 500,000 had the channel.

Unless I'm reading this wrongly that means BT Sports have added another 500,000 customers / subscribers in 3 weeks. As the season draws ever closer, I can see the same signing up again prior to Saturday!

Doesn't say exactly how many of those are new, paying customers.

BT Broadband has around 6.5 million existing customers, it's a fair bet quite a few of those will be signing up for 'free' BT Sports.

Sky is currently running a free broadband offer for Sky Sports customers.

It will be interesting to see how all this pans out - it seems somewhat high risk from BT's point of view unless they can sign up lots of NEW, paying customers. Otherwise a very, very expensive way to retain their existing customer base.

I think they will make a return. It has been estimated that BT have spent, or will spend in total, £1.3 billion in terms of sports rights and channel set up.

To cover their outlay BT will need to bring in £325,000,000 per year for the next 4 years, which works out at £27,083,333 per month. Big figures but when you break them down further that only equates to 1,800,000 subscribers paying £15.00 per month.

Taking into consideration advertising revenue, commercial business deals, BT Sports in Ireland, international distribution of some of their programming and the £15.00 connection fee for new customers, it’s very likely BT will see a return.

Something else to remember too is that BT will have to continue to invest money as and when contracts are up for renewal regarding showing rugby,footy etc. I know they may not be for a few years but you can guarantee Sky will come out fighting when contracts are up for renewal.

The Champions League rights are up for renewal in the next couple of months. Imagine if BT wrestled them away from SKY.
