Virgin Media measure UK's hottest shows
http://www.cable.co.uk/news/virgin-m...ows-801597336/
"Virgin Media has created a new algorithm that measures live, catch-up, on-demand and recorded TV viewing along with chatter on social networks to identify the UK's most-discussed television shows.
Dubbed The Hotlist, the ranking takes into account three methods of interaction - viewing a programme, engaging with it socially and talking about it enthusiastically after it's been on."

Re: Virgin Media measure UK's hottest shows
I was just going to open a thread on this news item so here's another link to the Hotlist.
http://www.televisual.com/news-detai..._nid-2899.html
Quote:
The top shows for May, using the new measurement are shown below, (ranked out of 10).
The Graham Norton Show (7.00)
Britain's Got Talent (7.00)
Doctor Who (6.00)
FA Cup (6.00)
The Voice UK (5.33)
Eurovision Song Contest (5.33)
The British Academy Television Awards (5.00)
Masterchef (4.67)
The Ice Cream Girls (4.00)
The Apprentice (4.00)
The British Soap Awards (4.00)

I hope that the programmers don't use this list to work out future schedules as I could become very disgruntled very quickly at the lack of quality viewing choices.

Re: Virgin Media measure UK's hottest shows
Australian and some US media companies look at how many people download torrents of a show to easily see what is and isn't popular. The percentages seem to be pretty similar across many sites.

Interesting point - I wonder why they do that?
As most of their shows are funded by advertising revenue, which they won't get if it's torrented, I wonder what the benefit to them is?

It may have been the actual channels looking at what shows to try and show rather than the actual media companies. I'll add a link if I find one of the articles about it again.
