Alex Ferguson transfer spend over 26 years: £546.5m
Total Recouped: £320.0m
Total spent with above factored in @ £226.5m
13 PremierLeague Titles.
5 FA Cup's
4 League cup's
2 Champions League's
1 Super cup
1 Uefa cup winner's cup
1 Club world cup.
Manager of the season x11
Manager of the decade x1
plenty other trophies.
and about 50 other awards under Manchester United.
Roberto Mancini in 4 years.
Spent: £285m
Recouped: 0m.
Net: £285m
1 x Premier League
1 x FA CUP
1 x Community Shield.
An absolutely shocking amount to spend with minimal return from it. Only to then publicly say he wanted to sign more players... Mancini deserved what he got at the end of the day.
Sir Alex Ferguson is undoubtedly the greatest manager of all time by far in my opinion. He may indeed have had big money but he spent it a lot wiser than any other manager out there.
The idea that money leads to greatness argument is old and stale now, Freddy Shepherd nearly destroyed Newcastle United by buying players that were highly rated but then flopped in the English League. Liverpool have spent massively in the past 3 years and have nothing to show for it in terms of League Standing.

The club sold Balo from under him (I believe).
It is of course a distortion to ignore the effects of inflation. For example, the British transfer record £3.75m in 1993 would equate to a lot more in today's money. Rooney, at the time dubbed the new Gascoigne would cost more than £25m today. Rio Ferdinand was £30m in 2001. But that is your wont.
As for an objective view:
City and United finished level on points in 11/12.
United strengthened their squad.
City lost De Jong, Adam Johnson, and Balotelli (for 2nd half of season)
Signings: Garcia, Maicon, Sinclair, Rodwell.
That transfer activity weakened City's team.
Obvious conclusion = Utd win the title.
BTW, net spend last season was barely £10m
