The V+ boxes and SD V boxes aren't compatible.

I know somebody who still has a Pace box from the NTL days, that definately won't be compatible

I'm surprised that they are bothering to collect these units now that it is known that they are to be made redundant and all hacks have been blocked (even the unofficial way to reactivate recording capabilities for FTA channels has now been stopped).
I suspect that they are doing this for two reasons. The first being that the high number of uncollected ex sub boxes were blamed in part for the unauthorised viewing of channels when this was a problem. The second may be the requirement of VM to meet the EU Directive on the disposal/recycling of electrical goods.

And if/when it gets to the point where they have to change you over, then it may well be that VM will absorb the associated costs.
But they aren't there yet. And as has been pointed out before, any mass free install of kit costs a lot of money - that would eventually have to recouped by increased charges to customers

...and made all the more complicated if Liberty Global decide to halt the distribution of TiVo in favour of their own PVR.
