Re: Virgin Media first-quarter results 2013
It seems to me that VM have gone in the right direction with their policies. Not confronting Sky head on would seem to be bearing dividends, as we have seen today.

Virgin has also signed a five-year deal to provide Sky Broadband with network backhaul (between exchanges and the wider internet), along with mobile backhaul from cell towers for Telefonica (owner of O2) and an un-named 'large UK mobile operator'.
|
Hrmph. Looks like they have a monopoly on the UK mobile market now then.
They already provide backhaul for MBNL and EE, now O2 and "an un-named operator", there's only one other operator that that could be...
... Except said operator takes pride in being the only operator to own their own independent nationwide fibre network so no idea why they're getting into bed with VM...

Re: Virgin Media first-quarter results 2013
Yeah.... I can assure everyone people who know a lot more about the situation than we ever will, will have decided this is a good idea.
Virginmedia have a great asset, finding new ways to monetise that asset is sensible. Virginmedia don't always need to compete, sometimes they can make money complimenting. Also as the 4G rollout starts if Virginmedia can intergrate themselves deep I to as many 4G networks as they can then they become a critical component. Very very wise.
The thing with "QAS" is he likes to localise VM so he thinks his opinions count. He has zero inside knowledge to the network or management, but still wants us to think his opinion is fact, it isn't.

Why would you have any idea? You don't know anyone in management from either company. But rest assured each company knows what they're getting into and what they will get back.

The business arm of VM isn't doing so well at the moment. Is this down to the state of the economy or something else?

I feel its "something else", Part of my job is to plan and design fibre upgrades for business and access networks and i have been kept busy by both sides of the business.

Isn't it a timing thing Sirius, as they appear to have signed some massive deals but it takes time to plan build and install and threfore there is a gap between sale and revenue flows?

Sky have got their own national fibre network too.
The thing VM has that Sky and Vodafone don't have is the Access Fibre reach.
Also VM (as previous identity NTL) used to provide Vodafone backhaul until about 5 years ago. We are already fibre to their sites and masts so we can obviously be competitve on price and RFS dates.

Re: Virgin Media first-quarter results 2013
The only reason the broadband increased is because they are throttling the hell out of the network, thus releasing extra bandwidth that would not normally be there in previously oversubscribed areas. They are then able to sell headline speeds to customers that in reality they can barely reach for more than a few hours at a time if they want to download anything of significance such as you know streaming, PSN+, BBC iPlayer that require large downloads. Heaven forbid you want to multitask and game at the same time cause you can forget the ping and any hope of winning because you are lagging all over the map....
